797.0. "A NEW PRINCETON HILLS RIDE - 8/7/88" by MCIS2::NORTON () Wed Jul 27 1988 10:04

    Larry Camilli and I would like to invite everybody on a new Princeton
    Hills ride on Sunday, August 7. It's a 60-mile ride from Princeton
    into Barre, then through small towns like Hardwick, New Braintree,
    No. Brookfield, etc. It's a very pretty ride with lots of scenic back
    roads (mostly in good condition), cows, corn, hills, etc. We can make
    a side trip to Brookfield Orchards for hot apple dumplings a la mode.

    We'll start from my house at 9:00 a.m. The ride will end at Larry's
    house for Ben & Jerry's ice cream.

    Here are directions to the start:

    Directions: Find your way to the center of Princeton. We're 2
    		 miles SOUTH of the center, on Route 31, #236, about 1/2
    		 mile past the Mountain Barn restaurant. If you go south
    		 on Route 31 and pass the Holden town line, you've gone
     		 too far.

    		 I'll put my flourescent orange jacket over the mailbox.
    		 The mailbox is across the street from the driveway.

    		 If you need better directions, please send me mail
    		 and let me know where you're coming from.

797.1Hill into Barre on 62 a killerUMBIKE::KLASMANWed Jul 27 1988 14:4710

Are you planning on riding into Barre up the hill on 62? Its a killer (was
part of the 300k and 600k BMB qualifier courses). The last time we were out
there (Jun 25th), the hill on 62 was completely torn up for road work.

797.2If it's torn up, we'll improviseMCIS2::NORTONThu Jul 28 1988 09:455
    I was by there about 2 weeks ago and it was still torn up. But
    you can turn right just before the big hill and go up a longer,
    but not quite as steep hill. Both hills end up in the same place.

797.3Just the hill I want to ride without pavementCREDIT::HOLDENThu Jul 28 1988 09:519
    I was up there last Saturday (the 23rd) and it was not really
    torn up but it certainly wasn't repaved either. I managed to
    get up the thing because I didn't feel like going around. To
    do that I had to ride in selected parts where there was enough
    pavement to get the traction necessary to get up it. This
    meant riding on the left side going up and still spinning the
    rear wheel a few times. It can be done but be careful if you
    try it.

797.4I'll probably be doing Burke Mt. while you're grinding away on thisMENTOR::REGJust browsing; HONEST, I'm BROKE !Fri Jul 29 1988 12:079

    	Arrgghhh ! NOW she tells us there's another way up ! Last
    time I was on that route the road heading OUT of Barre was also
    torn up, looked to be a major sewer project. FIRST time up that
    hill into Barre I was pulling out of double toe straps riding about
    a 51 x 19 fixed (slowly).

    I am hoping on attending this ride. Gosh, 9:00 sounds early though!
    I've never ridden through that area though so it should be a nice
    ride.

    Where does Larry Camilli live?

    Thanx for the invite.

	I also live in Princeton. Ending the ride at my house instead
	of Kathy's does lengthen it by several hundred feet, which might
	make a difference after 60 miles and the hill into Barre. But
	I'm buying the ice cream...
