772.1 | It's no wonder he did badly! | AMUN::CRITZ | | Thu Jul 14 1988 12:51 | 6 |
| Someone mentioned in the SPORTS notesfile (I believe) that
a 1 meter long tapeworm was found in Fignon's intestine.
Anybody else hear this?

772.2 | Hampsten riding?? | CSMADM::SCHWABE | | Thu Jul 14 1988 13:47 | 7 |
| Is Andy Hampsten racing? I thought for sure he would up there with
the leaders after winning the Tour of Italy earlier this season.
All things considered I feel he has greater potential than LeMond
ever had!

I Heard about it in OPG::CYCLE_RACING. Plus something about a
noter eating linguini at the same time he read it.
I don't Know anymore than that.
Hey, Roderick do you have anything more on this ?????

772.5 | Hampsten is still there | AMUN::CRITZ | | Thu Jul 14 1988 15:04 | 12 |
| Yea, I was the fella eating the linguini when I read the
note. Well, so much for lunch.
Hampsten is certainly in the Tour, although he isn't
doing that well (but, he is doing better than Fignon
was).
Reg,
I do believe it was a VHS tapeworm. 8*-)> I'm rroolllliinngg!

772.7 | Hampsten Still There | DUB01::OSULLIVAN | | Fri Jul 15 1988 05:13 | 6 |
| Hampsten was going really well until 2/3 way up L'Alpe D'Huez, then
he blew and Herrera flew by him. He finished some (?) minutes down.
Time Trial today. Will post an update later.
Bauer still there at 25".

772.8 | a big stage | RDGENG::MACFADYEN | Roderick MacFadyen | Fri Jul 15 1988 07:31 | 12 |
| Re .4, I don't know any more than the raw fact that he had one.
If they know it was 1 metre long, it must have come out... all at
once or in bits, do you think?
Yesterday was indeed a crucial day. Steven Rooks was a real revelation,
what a stage to win. Delgado and Herrera must be very hot contenders
to win now, maybe Bauer, maybe even Rooks if he can keep going.
Wiped out are Kelly, Zimmerman, Millar plus other big names I can't
remember, who all lost 20 to 30 minutes yesterday. I'll put results
in CYCLE_RACING as soon as I can access it.

| re .5> (Do tapeworms like pasta?)
You bet! A cleverly disguised piece of linguini is often dangled
just outside the carriers mouth to lure a tapeworm of the opposite
sex out of the intestine. As soon as they stick their head out...you
grab it and pull! Make sure the linguini is cooked "al dente" to give
it a more life-like appearance!

P.S. BTW. I noticed in this mornings paper that Andy Hampsten is
now in 10th place overall with Raul Alcala just behind him.

772.10 | | MOSAIC::MACK | | Mon Jul 18 1988 10:15 | 7 |
| I watched the coverage yesterday on the tube. Andy is in
10th place, but he's back about 10:xx minutes. He'll have
a devil of a time catching up.
Things are looking good for Delgado and Rooks.

772.11 | Delgado in control | IAMOK::WESTER | | Mon Jul 18 1988 13:44 | 13 |
| I watched the Tour on CBS yesterday too. I thought the coverage
was pretty good. Pedro Delgado was riding like a man posessed!
He and rooks? crushed the field on the Ald d'Huez, and then he followed
with a stunning win in the time trial. I thought he wasn't supposed
to be a good time trialist. Steve Bauer has been impressive. He's
not supposed to be a good climber, but he's done well. Too bad
for Andy Hampsten, but as he said, to win the Tour everything has
to fall in place just right. He couldn't keep pace with the leaders
on Alp d'Huez, and that cost him. Right now it looks as though
Alp d'Huez was the deciding stage in this year's Tour (barring a
collapse by Delgado this week).

772.12 | Deldado Dpoe Rumour | DUB01::OSULLIVAN | | Wed Jul 20 1988 09:47 | 7 |
| According to Spanish News Agency reportres on the T de F, Delgado's
team manager was told last night that his star had failed a dope
test taken after the Alpe D'Huez stage. It appears that traces of
steroids were found. An offical announcement is expected this
afternoon. An automatic penalty of 10 minutes should apply, dropping
him to eight place and leaving Steven Rooks in yellow. There are
also rumours that Gert-Jan Thunisse has failed a test.
|
772.13 | | WEEBLE::CRITZ | | Fri Jul 22 1988 12:38 | 13 |
| Just read in the Boston Glob 8-)> that Delgado passed the
test. The drug he tested positive for is not banned by
the International Cycling Federation. It is banned by
the International Olympic Committee. The drug, Probicin (sp)
is used to mask the use of anabolic steroids. Thunisse
tested positive and has been docked 10 minutes, moving him
from 4th to 11th.
I was talking to Paul Randazzo last night at his shop. He
said they all use drugs. Seems kinda silly to me to allow
something that masks something that is not allowed.

This just in from VNS # 1839:
// CYCLING : Tour of France
The organisers of this years Tour de France have issued "Wild Card"
invitations to Seven Eleven (Hampsten), Kelme (Parra), Fagor (Roche) and
Cafe de Colombia (Herrea). It is possible that the qualified Italian team
Ariostea will not take part, leaving a further "invitation" available for
ADR (Lemond).
Wouldn't that be something if Lemond and company didn't make it in?
