769.0. "Tragic Accident" by NCVAX1::FASS () Tue Jul 12 1988 19:30

Story from the Monday, July 11, 1988
    	issue of the Milwaukee Journal

Man dies of bike accident injuries

A former professional bicycle rider died Sunday of injuries
he suffered in a bike accident Friday in Greendale.
Howard A. Mueller, of 5628 Euston St, Greendale, was pronounced
dead at 10:45 a.m. at St. Luke's Medical Center of cardiovascular
collapse caused by a head injury, the medical examiner's report
    says. Mueller was 65.
The accident occured while Mueller was riding with two of his
children in the 6300 block of Root River Parkway. His son, Kerry,
38, said his father was demonstrating a move known as a slingshot.
The move is completed, the medical examiner's report says, when
a "biker reaches back and grabs the handlebars of the biker next
to him and pulls the biker on past himself."
Mueller completed the move with his son. But when he tried it
with his daughter Keelie,19, the bikes of the pair touched tires
and sent both riders to the ground, the report says. Mueller fell head
first into the curb. His daughter suffered scrapes and bruises.

That's unfortunate that he was fatally injured, but from the
description it doesn't sound that surprising. I guess he wasn't
    wearing a helmet either.

I wonder what the hell he was doing. If your not going to be a
track rider, there's no need to learn "the slingshot." If you pull
up along side someone and yank on their handlebars, they better be
ready, otherwise a crash will result.

re .1	Leave the guy alone will you, he's DEAD !

Of course you're guessing that he wasn't wearing a helmet, but
you seem to know so much more than an ex pro that you might as well
spout off about the wisdom of what they were doing and how. Were
you there ? did you see it all ? have you ever done this ? have
you ever done anything that wasn't totally sane and rational ?
have you ever had any fun ?

    RE.2
Hey, my first good flame! I've seen this guy Reg flame people all
over the notes file and now it's my turn.

Your right, I wasn't there and can only make assumptions. My guess
is probably correct about no helmet, the rest can only be speculation.
No, I've never tried this (is there a valid reason to try unless
your a track rider?). Your other points are pretty ridiculous and
    don't need a response.
