749.0. "Lancaster Pa. Bicycle Tour" by EVE::MOLLIN () Sat Jun 25 1988 00:52

I recently received the 1988 brochure from a small and relatively
new bicycle touring company in Pennsylvania. Last year I tried
to sign up for a fall tour in Lancaster County but they didn't get
enough people signed up to run it. Well, I called them to try a
mid summer date and they don't have enough people once again. The tour
sounds really great. It's four days of riding. Low mileage route
each day is about 31 miles, high mileage varies from 48 to 73 miles.
It includes staying at working farms owned by Amish and Mennonite
families. The tour price includes four nights of lodging, breakfasts
and dinners,a support vehicle to carry luggage from one farm to
the next and daily routes. The price is $385 and the dates that
I would like to go are July 25-29. I know that's fairly soon and
not much notice, but that is the trip they are offering that best
fits my schedule. I'm not getting any reduced price if I get other
people to sign up, I just want to get enough people to guarantee
that they will run the tour. Six people is their minimum. I have
a cartop carrier with attachments for two bikes, so I can share
the driving with someone. I can probably be talked in to buying
one or two more bike holders so four of us could go together.

If you are interested and want more info call me on DTN 223-2506 or
send mail to Axis::Mollin. My typing skills are not sufficient
for me include the entire tour description. If you definitely want
to go, send me mail or write a reply to this note and send me a
check for $150 made out to Bucks County Bicycle Tours and I will
send it along with my deposit. My mail stop is MLO5-5/E71.

I hope to hear from some of you.

Commercial tours of this sort puzzle me. A few weeks ago, about
2300 of us bicyclists spent a long weekend at Millersville College
near Lancaster. We rode on our choice of 23 or so rides from 6
to 126 miles each, attended workshops given by people such as Bill
McReady (sp) of Santana Tandems, Georgena Terry of Terry Bicycles,
and other lesser lights in the bicycling world (yours truly, too).
We had exhibits to see and social events to attend. The cost of
the weekend was about $130. (It cost me about $65 since I gave a
workshop.) You could go on any ride at any time, either at the
posted time with a mob including leaders and sweeps, or with a few
    friends at other times.
We waved at Amish children flying kites in their fields, saw
lots of Amish buggies, fought wild headwinds on Sunday, and in general
had a good time. (Agreed, we didn't stay with Amish familys.)
I brought back the map book and gave it to some friends who
are going down the July 4 weekend to do it on the cheap (camping).
Next year we'll be going 'high on the hog' with buffet style
meals and nicer accomidations at Saratoga Springs, NY for about
$175 for the weekend. By the way, I'm talking about LAW GEAR bike
rallies, if you hadn't heard of them. LAW - the way to go!

I went to a GEAR rally in Harrisonburgh VA in 1977. Great time!

    	Chris,

I never quite understood what you were puzzled about and why.

    	Scott (just curious, I guess)

    Re:749.1 Puzzled over commercial tours.

    Different people have different interests:
I have no interest in going to workshops during a vacation.
A commercial tour allows me to pick a date that will fit my
    schedule.
I would rather ride with and get to know a small group of people
instead of spending a weekend with thousands.
I like the idea of going from one location to another to get
a broader scope of the region.
I enjoy staying in different hotels/B&Bs/or farms and get close
to local customs and sample a variety of hearty meals.
4 or 5 day rides make more of a vacation than a weekend and
make it more worthwhile to drive 7 hours each way.
Having a tour guide to highlight local points of interest can
    make the ride more enjoyable.

In the fall of 1986 I went on a Vermont Bicycle Tour of northwestern
Vermont. This was a great tour and an experience I want to repeat
    in another area.

I'm glad that you had such a good time, but frankly I'm puzzled
that anyone would want to travel so far to go that type of an event
    for a weekend.

It was not possible to get the minimum number of people for the
July dates. Therefore, the tour for that week was cancelled. However,
there are enough people for a fall tour starting on Oct. 3rd. I
have signed up for it. If anyone else is interested, let me know
and I will send you a copy of the brochure.
