|  | Green street is a good hill. But I prefer it in the other direction :-)
Another good hil is the one that starts at the Norhtboro/Boylston Line 
on Church Street. It starts at the line and continues untill you get to 
the golf course.
My favorite hill of all is the road through Smugglers Notch at Stowe 
Vermont. The Appalachian Gap (near Sugar Bush North and Mad River Glenn) 
and Lincoln Gap (Bristol VT) are good too. These are for true 
masochists only though.

|  | For anyone in the Milford/Upton area: How about going UP the hill on
Upton road from 495 towards upton? I assume it to be about a mile up.
Havn't got the nerve to try to go up it but have done about 45mph
coasting down it. I come up the back side of the hill which has some 
nice short but steep hills seperated by small flat sections to let you
catch your breath.

|  |     No,no,no, I said "hill" climbing!  Is that, by any chance, the Mt.
    Wachusett hill climb?  Of course, I realize there are many mountainous
    areas in New England (although I lived in Colorado for 8 years so
    I use the term mountain loosely), but I was speaking of the local
    area, hopefully inside 495.  
    
    I don't really "enjoy" doing hill climbs, It's just part of my training
    routine.  Let's face it, if you ride a bike in New England the terrain
    is often very rolling so hill workouts will make it that much easier
    to deal with them.
    
    I don't want to knock New England mountains either.  After all, I
    ski, and we make do with what we have.  If I remember my Geology
    correctly, before the last ice age, the Appalachians were bigger
    than the rockies are now.  Our mountains are just a bit older!

		Past Erikson's into Stow...
	Left at the traffic light in Stow Center onto Route 62,
		Gleasondale Road, towards Hudson
		after 62 makes a sharp right...
	Left onto Whitman Street
	Right onto Boon Road at stop sign
		Cross 62, 
	Go right onto Randall Street
		then stay left through country club
		keep left at "Y" past golf practice range...
	Cross Hudson Road onto Wolcott Street
		Wolcott street ends and...
	Go Right onto Old Bolton Road
	Cross Tele Road onto Long Hill road
		Following Tele road will bring you to DEC Stow (OGO)
	Long Hill road ends at 117 a bit before the intersection with 495
		Heberts is not far away but there are no hills
		between the intersection of 117 and Long Hill Road
	To get to Heberts, go left onto 117 West and then right onto 
	Sugar Road just past 495. You can't miss Heberts on the right,
	At the end, turn around and go back...

In the Berlin/Boylston area there are some hills south of 62.
Heading west on route 62 out of Hudson past 495 to Berlin Center
	Left onto Sawyer Hill Road
	Right onto Brewer Road or 
		a bit later right onto
	Pleasant Street
	Either will get you back to Route 62 in or near Berlin Center
Just past Berlin center, going west on 62...
	Left onto Linden Street and follow...
	Right onto Mile Hill Road
	Left onto Main Street, (route 70 I think)
		Go along Wachusett Reservoir..
	Left onto Cross Road
	Left back onto Linden Street
	End up back in Berlin

In Southern Vermont around the Brattleboro/Dummerston/Putney/Westminster
there are lots of dirt roads with some good hills.  An ATB is best for
these dirt roads.  Best to get a good map of the area and explore.  
The Real Scoop on Route 5 in north Brattleboro is a good place to look 
at your own map (they don't sell maps at the Real Scoop).

   Link these together and you've got '4 Notches and a Pass' Century, a ride 
   that Ed Fisher ran last Saturday.  The route:
   Kancamagus (from w-->e) starting at 93/112;
   Bear Notch, to Crawford Notch (great headwinds!) to Franconia Notch to
   Kinsman Notch, back to 93/112.  Total of 95m.  
   This is without a doubt the best Century route I've ridden!  Fantastic
   scenery!  Challenging climbs (start with the Kangamagus, a 13m climb!) and
   exhilarating 40-50 mph descents that go on for miles! 
   This is a must-do route for you Century fans out there!

|  | The greatest thing about the 4 notches and a pass century route is that
the winds always run clockwise around the Old man in the mountains (the
rock, not me) so you get 5 hills with a headwind on each).
Do be prepared for bad weather.
Somehow, it does not follow that you get unending tailwinds if you
do it in the reverse direction.  It'll probably rain instead.

|  | I have a question about the area around Conway NH.
I want to go up and do a little riding in the area. A short ride that I 
propose to do would be to start in Conway take the smaller road that 
starts in Quint and follow it North then then West to rt 302 into 
Bartlett. The take the road from Bartlett past Bear Mountain to rt 112.
Then back to Conway. It looks like a 35 to 40 mile ride on the map. 
My question is, what is the road like that goes form Bartlett to 112?
Will there be a huge amount of hill climbing? My wife may rebel. :-)
I thought it might be a fun ride with lots of good scenery.

|  | Bear Notch Road.  The road's nice.  About 5 miles of climbing.  I don't
know the "smaller road" that you referred to but if you can get off
the main road in Conway, it will be good.  West Side Road is a good
one.
Beware Hurricane Mountain Road, but that's on the other side.

|  | Here's one for all those who work in NRO,SHR,and MRO.  I was in SHR
    for a meeting and brought my bike along.  We took rte. 20 East to
    Northboro, bear right towards the town center.  Turn left on to
    Church St. (CVS and several gas stations nearby).  bear left and
    stay on Church.  Not far ahead is Howard.  Right on Howard for about
    a mile.  At Y intersection bear left on Green St.  Go over 290.
    At bottom of bridge go straight across and up short climb. Save
    your energy for next half mile.  After scenic meadow prepare for
    a .6 mile steep climb that feels much longer.  I used a 21 and
    struggled up at speeds of 5 mph in spots.  At top of hill turn 
    left on to Ball Street.  Recover on pleasant flat stretch and get
    ready for an enjoyable downhill.  At bottom turn left on Church.
     Go under 290, (optional) follow about 1/4 mile  (?) and turn left 
    on Brewer. At end turn left on Green, go over 290 and do green St.
    again.  If not, once you go under 290 turn right on Crawford.
    (optional) turn right and climb steep .3 mile driveway at #339
    Crawford.  It says private drive, but no one was there.  There's
    another driveway a bit further along on the right at the Trust
    Realty sign.  That looks like a good one but we skipped it.  Turn
    right on West street and climb for 1 mile (it's the easiest climb,
    not really much to it).  Turn around and come back down.  At bottom
    Turn right on Crawford to head back to SHR.  To MRO go across Crawford
    and continue on West until you hit Church.  Turn right and follow
    into Northboro Ctr.  To SHR, take Crawford until end, turn right
    on Main (go past Ward Hill) into Shrewsbury.  Turn left at light
    on South St (by Julio's).  Follow to Rte. 9, cross and climb last
    hill back up to DEC.
    
    Green Street was brutal.  We were foolish to do it a second time,
    but we made it.  In case you lack motivation, as you wheeze up Green
    St. your going slow enough to let the Deerflies harass you.  That
    alone helps you push a little harder.  In fact, the deerflies come
    at you every time your speed drops below 13 mph.
    
    All the roads are in good shape and traffic is minimal.  The
    countryside is pretty and all in all it's a nice place to ride.
    
    Total distance for the SHR loop is about 20 miles (not exact because
    we took a few detours).  Time is dependant on how many side jaunts
    you take and how fast you go up the hills.  Overall I'd say this
    is a hill climb route that will give you a workout.
    
    One more option is to turn right at bottom of Ball Hill and follow
    Church up a long moderate climb and join the loop around Wachusett
    reservoir.  But that will really add time and mileage.
                         
    Two water bottles suggested!

|  |     Start at the Pepperell rotary. Head up Rt. 111, left onto Brookline
    Street. Once you hit the Hollis, NH town line, turn right on Worcester
    Road. Go UP worcester rd to the end.  Turn left at end onto NH Rt.
    122. At light in center of Hollis, left onto Rt. 130.  When Rt.
    130 takes the close to 90 degree turn to the right, turn left onto
    Pepperell Rd.  FOllow back through Hollis to Pepperell.  At the
    Pepperell line you can turn back onto Worcester Rd. and do the loop
    all over again.  Otherwise follow road back down to Rt. 111.
    
    I don't have a real granny gear, but one darn close to it.  At points
    on Worcester Road, I was probably going well under 5 MPH, while
    standing up and praying that nobody would come walking past me!
     Luckily, the hills aren't all that long -- just real steep.  On
    Rt. 130, they're both long and steep.
    
    Probably a 15 mile loop altogether.
