735.0. "BMX racing in the Fitchburg area?" by SCOMAN::DESHARNAIS (NO DUKES !) Fri Jun 17 1988 12:28

I'm looking for a BMX racing track in the Fitchburg area. Does
anyone know of such a place that has children's BMX races on the
    weekends?

    Thanks,
    Denis

Probably one of the best tracks in the area is on Rt 2A in Lunenburg.
They race every Saturday. Sign-up starts at 1:00 with races at
2:00 (or at least it was last year). Track is called Lakeview
BMX and the phone is (617)-582-7245. If you really get hooked,
there are tracks in Wakefield, Westfield, Sandwich, East Greenwich
RI, Seabrook NH, and (I think) Tempelton. If you need equipment,
give me a call. My son raced for six years and he has at least
    three of everything! Have fun.

Mark, thanks for the info. You've answered a lot of my questions.

Can you tell me at what age the kids start racing, and if they are
required to belong to a club or association?

    Thanks again,
    Denis

BMX is the only sport I know of that has a five year expert national
ranking - almost seems like a contradiction in terms! Most local
races have kids starting at seven or eight. Biggest classes are
in the eleven to thirteen range.

Almost every track is connected with either the NBL (National Bicycle
League) or the ABA (American Bicycle League). While both are national,
the NBL has more tracks and national races in the East.

You can go to any track and race as a beginner. Usually there is
some type of insurance fee ($10?) that can be applied to a national
membership - if you like it. I think that Lunenburg may even have
practice nights where there is no fee. Give them a call.

    Good Luck,
    Mark

There is a track out on Route 20, in Northboro. Head up Rt 495 and
west on 20 it's about 4-5 miles on the left. It's around back from the
bike shop. Sorry, can't remember the name but have seen it a hundred
times on my rides west on 20 from MR0. Just look for the bike shop
    on the left.

Sorry, but that track is no longer used for BMX. They now run remote
control models there. If you're interested, the fellow at the bike
shop will lease the track for BMX if you want to run it!
