726.0. "Wanted French headset and handlebar stem" by VISUAL::MILLING (Bob Milling, MKO2-2/K03, 264-2068) Tue Jun 14 1988 13:32

    Desperately looking for source of components for my French bike.
    I had the bottom bracket shell converted to English threads and
    can now us U.S. sources for everything except the HEADSET and the
    HANDLEBAR STEM.

    Specifically, I'm looking for the following:

    1.  Dura-Ace Headset  M25xP1 (French) threading

    2. Modolo Master SSC Titanio Handlebar Stem for
        - handlebar with 26mm outside diameter
        - fork tube with 22mm (not 22.2 like in the U.S.) inside diameter

    I might be able to get a friend to bring these over from France
    but it may be several months before he makes his next trip to the
    U.S.

    By the way, I had Paul in Category 1 call his Shimano rep. about
    the headset and he was told that it wasn't available. Either it's
    just that rep's off-the-cuff opinion and he really could do a special
    order, or Shimano just won't import these to the U.S.

    Any, ANY, suggestions will be appreciated.

726.1forgot: 110mm reach on stem neededVISUAL::MILLINGBob Milling, MKO2-2/K03, 264-2068Tue Jun 14 1988 13:349
    Forgot to mention that I need 110mm reach on the stem but will
    accept 100mm or 120mm.

    If they come in varying lengths then I'd like the longest that is
    available.

726.3would like to find a U.S. sourceVISUAL::MILLINGBob Milling, MKO2-2/K03, 264-2068Wed Jun 15 1988 09:2723
    Thanks for the offer John, but I'm really looking for a U.S. source
    where I can get something quickly.

    I would not want to send something like this through internal mail,
    but it might be possible through regular mail although potentially
    very slow. There is a "Velodor" (?) store in Antibes just a block
    from Place de Gaulle that is usually well stocked with Shimano parts
    although they seem to sell mostly Campy. Is this the store you
    are referring to?

    A friend of mine in Valbonne has already checked with their sister
    store up between Grasse and Pre du Lac. They didn't have the headset
    in stock so he missed getting it in time for his trip over here
    this week.

    So, my frame is on the way back from the painters and I have to
    decide whether to install the old headset which or wait until I can
    locate what I really want.

    Again thanks for the offer. I'll take a rain-check as there may
    not be any other options.

726.4Do NOT use "internal mail" for thisDR::BLINNPut a REAL pinhead in the Oval Office!Wed Jun 15 1988 10:3411
        John, please DON'T send anything like that through internal
        mail, unless you FIRST make sure that you're not violating
        any export or import laws on either end. It won't be just
        you that gets in trouble, it would be Digital, and getting
        Digital in trouble is a BIG mistake. (Note that this applies
        mostly when crossing international borders -- although in the
        U.S. there are rules about using internal mail for personal
        stuff, which can result in your stuff being confiscated; I
        can't speak for the rules in the rest of the world.)

726.5headset found, still looking for stemVISUAL::MILLINGBob Milling, MKO2-2/K03, 264-2068Thu Jun 16 1988 09:2927
    It looks like at least half my problem is solved. I have located
    a French headset.

    Disappointed that my friend brought me the wrong model headset
    from France, I checked all the local shops and mail order houses
    again. This time around I talked to Dave at Nault's in Manchester.
    He seems to be a real wiz at located odd parts through ties with
    a variety of suppliers around the country. Within 5 minutes he
    made three calls and located a supplier in New York who has the
    French Dura-Ace headset in stock. I'll get it Monday or Tuesday.
    Wow!  That's service.

    To complete the story I should mention that many shops simply
    refused to even try to locate the part. Others, like Paul at
    Category One, said they would try to order it through Shimano
    U.S., but after over 2 weeks of trying were never able to get
    through to their Shimano sales rep.

    I'll get the headset installed within a few days. Now, all I
    need is a Modolo handlebar stem in the French 22.0mm diameter
    or someone to give me confidence that the U.S. 22.2mm stem will
    fit just fine. I know, 0.2mm isn't much but my service book
    says its enough to cause problems.

    I'll update this note again as soon as I locate a stem.

726.6Maybe in the other mailLEROUF::WILSONJohn in Valbonne, FranceThu Jun 16 1988 09:585
    Thanks to Tom and Bob for the tip about internal mail. I had naively
    forgotten about such things as import-export laws.
    Let me know if you need it sent by surface mail, Bob.

726.7More testimony on Nault'sAIMHI::JSMITHBikes Spoke_n HereThu Jun 16 1988 13:5117
    Nault's is definately the answer. Ron at Goodales told me he tried
    several sources all the way out to the west coast, to locate a
    conversion from solid cranks on my old Schwinn, so that I could
    use the cranks and chainwheel left over from my Cannondale conversion.
    He also stated that if I did find it kit it would run around $70.
    I was in Nault's looking for a set of Scott clip on bars that Ron
    was out of when I just happened to mention the problem to Dick.
    He casually strolled into the stock room and returned with the
    conversion kit. Not only did he have it in stock, but the real
    kicker was that it was only $11, and get this, he gave me the
    10% Granite State Wheelmen discount on it. Maybe I shouldn't be
    mentioning this here. You know, like the old secret fishing hole
    that will be spoiled by to many fishermen :-) I think I've found
    a new Service Dept. BTW he stocks CANNONDALE's which Goodales
    dumped last year so next to Butchkas I'guess he's now the Southern
    N.H. Area's best choice.

726.8now looking for brakesVISUAL::MILLINGBob Milling, MKO2-2/K03, 264-2068Mon Jun 27 1988 13:0221
    ref: .0 Well, I've got the French Dura-Ace headset installed and
    I've taken a 22.2mm handlebar stem and trimmed it down so I can get
    about 3 inches into my French 22.0mm (id) fork. Looks nice. Hope
    it doesn't rust.

    I installed everything on my newly painted frame except for the
    brakes. Hmmm, another problem. Dura-Ace only comes in a
    short-reach model (39-49mm); my frame needs another 5-8mm.

    O.K. I might have been better off just getting a new frame but I
    really like the old one. Besides, I'm already well along this
    route...

    So, Dave at Nault's is looking around for another manufacturer's
    brakeset with comparable strength and durability. He think's he can
    find a Campy set with the longer "regular"-reach.

    Now that I am no longer locking myself into Dura-Ace, are there
    any opinions about other brakes out there?

Talk to Ed Fisher if you're interested in a set of Shimano 600 EX long reach
brakes. I believe he has a set.

    Good idea, but I've already got the original set of regular-reach
    600EX brakes from this bike. My plan is to move them over to another
    lesser used bike and upgrade to something more substantial on my
    good bike.

    I do a lot of hill climbing and at just over 200 lbs. need good brakes
    to handle the fast downhills.

I thought 600 EX was rather substantial, actually.
