720.1 | Well situated for touring | DARTS::MHARRIS | Je pense qu'on me suit | Mon Jun 13 1988 14:15 | 10 |
| Mike Farny (Lincoln Guide Service) mentions several in his book, "New
England Over the Handlebars" (now several years old), mostly state-run
campgrounds in south central Vermont, White Mountains area of New
Hampshire, and in inland and coastal Maine. Among the ones I remember
are Mt. Greylock in Mass., Emerald Lake and Silver Lake in Vermont, and
Mt. Blue and Camden Hills in Maine. Unfortunately, I've never
patronized any of them so I can't add any recommendations, but the
cycling sounds good.

720.2 | Nothing like an Island! | GRAMPS::MATATIA | | Wed Jun 15 1988 09:34 | 7 |
| Try Martha's Vineyard (MA) family campgrouds. The Island has many nice
touring areas. Bike racks are commonly found since bicycle riding
is a popular means of transportation. There are also some bike paths
throughout the area and where there are none, the traffic is usually
not to bad. Going out to the islands extremes is approx. 50 miles
round trip. (I think DEC has discount ferry tickets available to
get to the island???).

720.3 | Try NH | NUTMEG::HATCHER | | Tue Jun 21 1988 14:49 | 13 |
| Try the Campton Campgrounds, on Rt 49 in Campton, NH. It's run
by the National Forest Service, reasonably cheap, on the access
road to Waterville Valley, about ten miles away. Good touring up
and down Rt 3 and 175.
Als a NFS campground on the Kancamagus Highway in Lincoln about
25 miles north of Campton.
I do a lot of riding between Plymouth and Lincoln, it's pretty nice,
lots of hills.

720.4 | Vermont is for ... | HPSTEK::EKOKERNAK | | Wed Jun 29 1988 14:43 | 11 |
| I want to second the recommendations in .1. We stayed at Emerald
Lake campground over Memorial Day weekend and used the tours listed
in N.E.O.T.H. (my favorite bike day tripping book). It's also a
nice area. There tend to be organized tours in that area as well,
but they stay at country inns and B&B's. You could also arrange
your tour so it was very hilly, or just about flat, because it's
a river valley.
We're going to try out the Vineyard in a couple of weeks.

| ***** ACADIA *****
My wife and I do alot of camping and cycling, and of all
the places in N.E. we've been, we like Acadia Nat. Park at Mt. Desert
Island in Maine the best. We usually stay at the Bass Harbor camp
ground which is far from the congestion of Bar Harbor if you choose
to go during peek months(we usually stick with off season periods
like May and Sept.).From Bass Harbor , you can ride through Southwest
Harbor, to Northeast Harbor, into Bar Harbor, around the Park Loop
road or any variety of routes from 20 to 80 miles round trip. There
are some good hills (Cadillac Mt. for example is a fair workout)
and some really incredible scenery, especially along the shore portion
of the park loop road ( which by the way is one way ).
The second choice would be the Kangamangus trip from North
Woodstock/Lincoln to Conway and back (about 70-75 challenging miles
).
One last idea. If you are ever inclined to leave N.E. to
ride, Cape Breton in Nova Scotia is another great place. You can
drive or take the Blue Nose.
