709.0. "New England Coastal Bike Paths??" by BEING::TEGAN () Tue Jun 07 1988 11:45

    I am planning a biking trip from somewhere on the Maine coast down
    to Boston following the coast as closely as possible. Has anyone
    done this before or know of a good route that includes camp sites?
    We are planning on biking for 4 or 5 days, basically taking it easy
    and enjoying the coast (50 miles or so a day).

    Any help would be appreciated.

    I have often thought about biking the coast of Maine. I have taken
    several trips from Portsmouth to Old Orchard as well as the Camden,
    Castine and Deer Island areas. The Portsmouth to Old Orchard routes
    are very pretty and fairly easy. The Camden area is fantastic. We
    biked for two days in the Camden area and loved it. We also tried
    Castine to Deer island. Much to our surprise, it was very hilly,
    almost like a roller coaster.

    	My guess is that most of the coast line is not easily accessable
    by bike, particularly Bath to Rockland. There are many inlets that
    will stretch for 10-30 miles !!. You may have to take main roads
    if you want to make any progress south. If you like country inns,
    there are plenty along the coast. Good luck, Chuck
