I am going on a business trip in a couple of weeks to Pebble Beach
California (tough, I know) and am thinking of staying a few extra
days and biking. Does anyone out there know if there is good cycling
in the area?
How about flying with a bike? Any comments? Hints?
I know renting might be a better idea, but I am about 5.1 and have a
Terry (one of those bikes with the small front wheel) and am afraid
I would be hard to fit if I went to a bike shop and tried to rent.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I've flown with a bike before. [It cost me $25 one way] They put
your bike in a big box like it arrives in the bike shop. You should
bring a couple of tools so that you can take off the front wheel
and the pedals (dont fit in the box otherwise). $50 is about the same
as renting a bike for a few days.
My only other advice would be to remember to take your 17mm pedal
wrench out of your back pocket before going through them there medal
detectors ! :( !

it should be 15 mm but that sets of the metal detectors, too. | |||||

Nancy,
"First the good news". Its nice to have your own bike that fits
with you. I have taken a bike with me on trips and its been great
to be able to explore new areas with your own bike. I took my bike
with me on a business trip to Monterey CA this spring. It cost me
$30 each way (Delta). (check with various airlines. I believe
that at least one of them will consider a bike as one of the pieces
of luggage!) Delta provided the box. To prepare for shipment, I
had to remove the pedals and rotate the handlebars 90 degrees. I did
not have to remove the front wheel. You should also position the rear
derailer in as close to the rear wheel as possible to prevent damage.....
Be prepared for the possibility of damage to the bike! On my April
trip, when I went to pick up the bike on arrival in Calif, I found
the bike box was crushed, the handlebars were partially sticking
out thru the sides of the box (this is after they were turned 90
degrees),the gum 'hoods' over the brake levers were torn, and the
rear derailer hanger was slightly bent . The airline people took
a "so what" attitude. Fortunately, none of the damage was fatal.
On the return trip, the bike and box arrived at Logan intact.
The box was in as good a shape as when I put the bike in it in CA.
I will be interested in hearing about other peoples experience with
the airlines!
However, I have been less than happy
with the treatment the bike has received by the airlines.

Pebble Beach is next to Monterey (20 mins by car). Where did you
ride? Was it worth bringing you bike all that way (especially since
it was damaged)? Any favorite routes that you remember?
Thanks for sharing your flying experience. I'd hate to have my
bike damaged, but agree that there is no better way to explore a
new area. Guess I'll just keep my fingers crossed....(and the number
of a local bike shop with me).
