692.0. "Century schedule - sanity arrives!" by EUCLID::PAULHUS (Chris @ MLO 8-3/T13 dtn 223-6871) Fri May 27 1988 13:27

September is Century Month (now extended into October, but the
days are getting shorter quickly that time of year and few clubs
will try Centuries later than September). The month that most LAW
affiliated bike clubs offer a 100 mile ride. In the past, in Eastern
New England, there were the following Centuries offered:
First Weekend : Labor Day Weekend - no Centuries
Second Weekend: TFCE at Tiverton - NBW
Third Weekend : GSW, NVP and CRW (massive conflict!)
    	Fourth Weekend: 7HW

Key: NBW = Narragansette Bay Wheelmen - the Rhode Island Club
GSW = Granite State Wheelmen - the N.H. club
NVP = Nashoba Valley Pedalers - club based in Acton, MA
CRW = Charles River Wheelmen - Boston based club
7HW = Seven Hills Wheelmen - Worcester based club

In the past, as a curtesy, most clubs kept the second weekend clear
so that their riders could do the big (over 1000 riders) TFCE ride.
NBW was expected to host the 1989 NEAR rally. The directors of
the club have said that they will not support NEAR in R.I. as planned.
The behind the scenes activity has been of such a nature that most
of the clubs no longer think NBW merits the curtesy of keeping the
second weekend clear for their ride. Also, GSW has moved their
century to the fourth weekend. Last night, NVP decided to move
their centruy to the second weekend. So, the century schedule for
eastern New England for 1988 looks like this:

First Weekend : Labor Day weekend
Second Weekend: NVP in Eastern Mass, NBW in R.I.
Third Weekend : CRW in Eastern Mass
Fourth Weekend: GSW in N.H., 7HW in Central Mass

I think this is a Major improvement over the 'everyone on the third
weekend' schedule of the past! The rain last year wiped out everyone!
I'm looking forward to doing 3 centuries in a row with NVP,CRW and
GSW! I hope you'll join me. - Chris

A Century in October! Thank goodness someone scheduled one instead
of saying "The days are too short, the weather is too cold, blah, blah."

As for the "2nd weekend" business, thanks, also. I hated that "thousands
of cyclists" business.
