| One other point...
I do want 10 speeds because I will go 5 or 10 miles over rolling
dirt roads.

| I think you want a lower-priced "mountain bike,' particularly if
you want to ride on dirt roads. For me, a 10-speed if much preferable
if you like riding fast for long distances on good pavement. If
the goal is to ride around generally for shorter distances on poor
or non-existent pavement, I think a non-fancy "mountain bike" is
the way to go.

Many of us in this conference are "hard core" riders who recognize the
differences between a road racing bike, a road touring bike and a off-road
"mountain" bike. And our answer is GET ONE OF EACH.
OK, get real, one bike. You live in the country, dirt roads (maybe no roads),
riding with the kids, riding in parks. Answer, mountain bike.

| One more question... Why do I need a Mtn bike vs. an ATB?

| Another alternative to mountain bikes if you don't want to spend
a lot of money is a city bike. They are built like a mountain bike
but not as durable. They're available in the $250.00 range. This
isn't a bike for the hardcores, but it's designed for the more sedate
riders that need a bike that will hold up to the potholes and light
off road use. It won't dent your pockets quite as much and it will
probably meet your needs.
