660.0. "Ultegra -- Dura-ace compatible??" by NAC::CAMPBELL () Wed May 11 1988 11:13

    I'm thinking of getting a bike with 600 ultegra on it, and I'm
    wondering if there's a way out of using the cassette hubs!!
    Not that I have anything against them, it's just that I have
    a couple of sets of good wheels kicking around and I'd hate
    to have to toss them, or re-lace them just for the ultegra stuff.

    One thing I noticed is that Dura-ace comes in both cassette type
    and freewheel type. My idea is to use Dura-ace freewheels on the
    ultegra system. Anyone know if this will work?? Sure Dura-ace
    freewheels aint cheap but they're cheaper then buying new wheels.

660.1How many people are doing it?NEXUS::MONROEWed May 11 1988 14:4013
    Hi Stew,

     Funny that you asked...I did just that...

    I have all Ultegra,I'm using Shimano 600 hubs with the Dura-Ace
    7 speed freewheel with no problems at all..I had talked to some
    people at Bike Nashbar and was told I'ld have to use the cassette
    hub/cogs with the Ultegra but then I went to a few bike shopps in
    Denver and here in Colorado Springs and was told that it would be
    no problem,so needless to say I bought the parts from Bike Nasbar
    and put them on...

660.2According to Shimano's brochureBRAT::SMITHNever say never, I always say.Wed May 11 1988 18:109

    	And according to Shimano's elaborate brochure, the DURA-ACE
    	(CS-7400-7) and ULTEGRA (CS-6400-7) Freehubs, and individual
    	Freewheel sprockets, are interchangeable.

660.3cassette hubs !NEXUS::MONROEWed May 11 1988 19:027
    Stew,

       It seems the key thing is the spacing between the spockets
    on the freewheel. I'm useing the standard 600 hub and a dura-ace
    freewheel. Like you I don't want to deal with the cassette hubs.

660.4Good enough for me!!!NAC::CAMPBELLThu May 12 1988 09:437

    Needless to say, that's good news!!! I didn't want to have to
    buy new wheels! I'll be using some different hubs, and fill you
    in on how they work. That is, when I get the new thing already!!

    Thanks
    Stew
660.5Ultegra/Dura-Ace work fine for me!ARCHER::KLASMANThu May 12 1988 18:0413

                     -< Ultegra --  Dura-ace compatible?? >-

I just upgraded my bike to Ultegra shifters/derailleurs and I'm using Dura-Ace
7spd freewheel and Dura-Ace chain. They work together perfectly! Dead solid!
I love it! Now after 80-100m I can still shift successfully. Will really
help on the BMB qualifiers. The D_A chain is probably overkill...I'm sure the
600 chain would work fine and is alot cheaper.

You're in Nashua, right? Goodale's made the switch for me and did an
excellent job. BTW, what bike are you thinking about?

    	I'm thinking of buying a bike from colorado cyclist. They have
    some great deals. This one is a Tommassini SLX frame with ultegra
    components! Now if DEC stock can only get above 105.......
