| > Did the "Big Event" bike ride happen yesterday in Concord Center?
The event did occur... I was there from 7am to 5pm. There
were many bargains to be had at the tag sale (The Big Event)
and the weather was nice enough that many people went on the
rides.
Your host,
John A. Wasser

From this you will see that on Feb. 1, I posted the notice for the
Big Event.
Since I need blue skys to get me going, I didn't make it, but I
heard that it was a success with 45, count 'em, 45 used bikes being
sold! This is turning into quite THE bike swap meet for the area.
It happens every other year, as something to do when there's no
NEAR. And speaking of NEAR, the officers of the Narraganset Bay
Wheelmen (The R.I. club) refuse to support a NEAR in their area
and will not be a host club for the event. I'm resigning from NBW
and will give serious thought to future TFCE's. Creeps. The NEAR
board is going down to UConn on 5/14 to check it out. We'll need
to get Conn. bike clubs involved if this is going to work. I've
volunteered to map a mid-distance ride if UConn is used 'cuz I'm
sure they will have problems finding people with local knowledge.
Thank god the warm weather has finally hit New England. - Chris

643.5 | NBW & TFCE = Grrrr | ENGINE::PAULHUS | Chris @ MLO 8-3/T13 dtn 223-6871 | Thu May 05 1988 13:11 | 19 |
| re. .4 Sorry Liz, brevity gets the best of me at times:
NBW = Narragansett Bay Wheelmen, the big R.I. club that puts on
TFCE = The Flattest Century in the East.
I've heard that the NBW board think they have such a good thing
going in the TFCE - a Major money-maker for NBW - that they refused
to support NEAR. I could say more, but it may be libelous - contact
me personally for details. I've worked on NEARs since '82, always
representing myself as a member of NVP, the local club, and NBW,
which I joined years ago since I thought TFCE was such a great event.
I am much ticked that the officers of NBW have taken such a small
minded attitude. NBW could easily be the host club for NEAR - they
were the host club for LAW's Centinial meeting in '80 and already
have the experience of working with URI and have rides mapped.
Howard Stone, the rides director for NBW is the good guy in this
mess - he worked on NEAR '87 with us and championed NEAR '89 in
NBW. He got many individual supporters in NBW, but couldn't budge
their board. Grrrrrr! No more TFCEs for me! (And I'll try to persuade
my friends not to go, either as a protest to NBW.) - Chris
