642.0. "Row-bear is ALIVE!!!" by CREDIT::HOLDEN () Mon May 02 1988 11:55

Has anyone been wondering what became of Row-bear the world-famous
huckster who was an institution at The Bicycle Exchange (you know,
in Harvard Square)? Robert could sell anything to the Hah-vahd students
by turning up his French accent control (theese is a ril huro-peen frem).
His considerable knowledge of frems and components aside, Row-bear has
been the object of an infinite number of jokes and tends not to have
much credibility with the riders I know.

Well, I was shaken to the core when, while shopping at Belmont Wheelworks,
a highly respected shop, I spotted Row-bear near the shoes talking to
someone. Why was he spying on Wheelworks I thought? I got closer
and realized, to my horror, that he WORKED there. I went over to my
friend and pointed to Row-bear. He looked as shocked as I did. A
near-by Belmont old hand saw what was happening and came over to comfort
us. It didn't help much though.

The ultimate was, as he was leaving to go home, John Allis (a really
nice guy by the way) came over and started talking to Row-bear and the
customer about Time shoes. It was as if Jerry Lewis and Jack Nicholson
were in a movie together.

So, let this be a warning to all of you. When you go into Belmont, beware
the "Frenchman". And if you hear someone saw "huro-peen frem", turn and
walk away quickly - don't let him catch your eye.

Thanks for the update on Row-bear. I've been quite happy with the
Veeeeetus frem he sold me. Now I know where to go if I want a
dissertation on campy's approach to indexed shifting.

I ran into Row-bear at Belmont Cycles and I got his impressions
on Campy's Synchro shift. He says the greatest thing about it is
the large lever they give you to switch it back to friction...
