622.1get a hanger - they're cheapVISUAL::MILLINGBob Milling, MKO2-2/K03, 264-2068Fri Apr 15 1988 15:188
    There are deraileur hangers available real cheap (couple of dollars).
    The fit on the right dropout with a small bolt to hold them in place
    in the dropout. The wheel, itself, supplies most of the force to
    hold it in place.

    I use one on an old touring bike - works fine.

    	I just called my favorite frame-builder, Peter Mooney. He says
    that he could repair it for a reasonable price, but doesn't want to
    say how much until he sees where it is broken, and what sort of
    dropout/hanger it is. I had the rear brake bridge replaced on one
    of my frames for about $20.00, and I don't imagine that this will
    cost much more. Paint is extra, but braze marks should fit the
    mountain bike image.

    (I assumed that you are in Eastern Mass, and can get to Belmont
     Wheelworks without too much trouble.)

    	Another torch bearer is Dave Hartrafft (sp ?) in Lincoln, quite
    near to Lincoln Guide Service. I imagine he would repair it to
    any level of pretty/cost that you chose, i.e. just brazed up to
    full repaint.

    {Yeah, I gotta torch too; but you really don't want to hear about
    that:-^) }

    Well I took John's advice (622.2) and contacted Peter Mooney at
    Belmont Wheel Works. Seems that it might be a reasonable repair
    bill after all, but Peter wouldn't commit to that over the phone,
    so were going to get together next Thursday evening. I'll post
    the outcome here in the future. Thanks for the responses.

622.5A visit to the Wheel WorksAIMHI::JSMITHBikes Spoke_n HereFri Apr 29 1988 18:0421
       Well here's how it went with Peter Mooney at Belmont Wheel
Works. Seems that the derailleur hanger bent back the bottom of
the drop out, sufficiently enough to cause concern that it would no
longer support the wheel axle. This being the case, Peter indicated
that he would need to cut the dropout off and braze on a new one.
The cost for this would be about $100. Since the bike was only
$300. new it doesn't make much sense to spend that kind of money on
repairs. Soooo Peter sold me a $2.00 hanger plate and told me to
find a local welder who would weld it onto the frame for a few dollars.
He suggested some people in Cambridge, but thats to far for me to
travel. If there is anyone in Southern N.H. out there that has the talent
and the tools to weld it up for a few bucks, I'd sure like to hear
from you. Otherwise, I'll be looking to sell it for parts again.
I'm glad I got to visit Belmont Wheel Works and check out the toys.
I've never seen so many bikes over $1k in one building before.
Someday I'll trade my 500 in for a 2000. At least with a
Cannondale your guranteed to never have a broken frame problem.
Matter of fact, I don't think I'd even have a problem if it was
a Nashbar, but I didn't see any of those at the Wheel Works
