579.0. "MKO Lunch Time Rides" by AIMHI::JSMITH () Wed Mar 16 1988 19:11

       			W A N T E D

         M A L E A N D F E M A L E B I K E R I D E R S

To participate in MKO 8 to 18 mile lunch time rides.

Tentative Schedule:

MONDAYS:	Recrational Riders (Less than 10 MPH) - 8 to 10 Mile Rides

       WEDNESDAYS: Moderate Riders (10 - 15 MPH) - 10 to 15 Mile Rides

FRIDAYS: Aggressive Riders (Animals 18 + MPH) - More than 15 Mile Rides

I am familiar with the backroads in Merrimack and Amherst and would be
willing to coordinate and lead the Easy and Moderate Day rides, but
will look to someone in better condition to lead the Agressive Rides,
I will however, volunteer to provide route maps and attempt to ride
sweep at the back of the pack.

If your interested send me mail at AIMHI::JSMITH or leave your name on
the sign up sheet in the Mens or Ladies shower room at MKO. Be sure
to indicate what days your interested in and if your interested in
leading the speedsters on Fridays. I'll collect all the inputs and let
everyone that sign's up know what the schedule looks like.

I plan on kicking off the Lunch Time Rides on April 4th (weather
permiting) if there is sufficient interest. All rides will depart from
the North Entrance to the MKO1 facility at NOON on the scheduled week
day.

If your not interested yourself but you know someone that might be please
pass the word along. This could possibly lead to a very active branch
of the Digital Bike Club.

579.1Why group riding at high noon?FRAGIL::SHATTUCKThu Mar 17 1988 16:357
More for my curiosity than anything else....Why do you want a lot
of people to participate in the noontime bike rides? Is there any
reason to have a large group going out instead of just yourself?
Also, where would be a good place to get my bike tuned up? The
last place I tried (in Philly) wanted $49.00 to do it, that's not
worth it in my book. Thanks

579.2why pay someone to tune your bike?CADM::ROTHIf you plant ice you'll harvest windFri Mar 18 1988 06:0914
Also, where would be a good place to get my bike tuned up? The
last place I tried (in Philly) wanted $49.00 to do it, that's not
   worth it in my book.

I don't know why anyone needs to pay to have their bike 'tuned',
since it's so easy to do oneself. It's very rare that any sort of exotic
tool is needed (unless a headset needs to be replaced, and you'll know
when that's the case.) You can probably do a better job anyway.

As for the origional question, the comraderie of riding in a group can
be fun, of course, particularly if the group splits into equal-level
    riders.

579.3MKO Area Repair ShopsAIMHI::JSMITHFri Mar 18 1988 12:5913
Two Bike Shops in the MKO area that I am familiar with are Sunshine
Sports on route 101A and GOODALES in Downtown Nashua. I recommend
GOODALES (Ask for Ron) but they tend to be on the expensive side,
their work on the other hand is , in my opinion, worth the additional
expense. If your looking for a sping tune up special (similar to
the winter skiing variety) wait a few weeks and I'm sure Sunshine
will be advertising one for about $25.00.

As for riding in a group I see several benefits, mine are mostly
motivational, but others include comaradere (sp.) and company in
the event of an accident, emergency or simple repair to help to
get you back to work on time. A little friendly competition can
really help to develop you training goals. Hope you can join us.
579.4MKO Tuesday Evening RideAIMHI::JSMITHBikes Spoke_n HereMon Apr 25 1988 18:0348
Concensus of opinion is that we keep the lunch time rides the
same, and get together for a long ride on Tuesday evenings, with
Thursday evenings as an alternate rain day each week. If you would
like to add your name, delete your name or get a copy of the MKO
Bikers mailing list send me mail at AIMHI::JSMITH. Make sure you
put a "J" in front of Smith or it`ll go to the system operator who's
a real *jerk* when it comes to other peoples mail.

This is a little longer version of the ride we did last Tuesday.
Hope to see you this Tuesday, at 5:15 in the North Lot of MKO1.

    	Jerry,

I'd be interested to know why you think this "system operator"
is such a *jerk* when it comes to other people's mail. I *know*
for a fact that any mail this *jerk* received that wasn't for
him, was either sent back to the originator with a list of who
the message may be intended for, or forwarded to the proper
recipient. This doesn't seem to be the actions of a *jerk*.

							     Signed,

							     The *jerk*

P.S. By the way, it's System Manager. And didn't your mother
ever tell you it wasn't very nice to call people names?

Your reply just proved my point. Also, your
wise mouth reply to the sender of a message meant for me
was irresponsible and offensive. Use the mailwatch program
I sent you to inform senders that there are multiple Smith's
on the system or clean up your act. If you'd like to talk to
me about my mother, I'll be glad to settle that *outside*.

The dispute between AIMHI::JSMITH and AIMHI::SMITH (which has
nothing to do with bicycles) is being referred to their local

Shows you what a New England winter can do.... :^( Actually, we
don't want to lose either Mike or Jerry from the conference. A
few miles out spinning in the sun can do wonders for the spirit
-- I mean, we cyclists know what's important in life, don't we?

Starting Tuesday, May 1, 1988 we will be joining
up with the Granite State Wheelpeople at the Nashua High School
(Visable from Route 3 right after the Nashua Mall heading South) at
5:45 every Tuesday in May and June. In July and August we will be
conducting the Tuesday Evening at Merrimack (T.E.A.M.) Rides right
from the MKO parking lot. We'll be looking for route suggestions
so if you have a favorite 20 to 25 mile romp around Merrimack, please
jot it down and let me know. This arrangement should be real nice for
us since we'll have more people to ride with, be able to break into similar
riding ability groups, and get mileage credit from the GSW. Terrific.
See you at the Nashua High School at 5:45 (Ride begins at 6:00).

       					Jerry

Directions: Meet at Nashua Senior High School.
Take Everett Turnpike to Exit 5W. Follow Route 111
west for 0.5 mile to lights. Turn right on
Riverside Street. Meet at parking lot at end of
              Riverside Street.

I hope this doesn't muddy the water, but, you can "exit" 111
before you get to the lights. There's a road that cuts off
just before the lights. Doesn't make much difference, but,
if you notice it, take it.

    re. -1
Thanks for the tip Scott. I noticed this road, but was unsure
if it was a service road or not. We had a great turn out, especially
since the sky was overcast. Turned out to be great weather. We
got 25 miles in with 2 to 3 groups all averaging over 16 mph (which
didn't go over well with some of the new comers....that'll change
when we move the rides to the Merrimack area in July, since allot
of MKOvians have expressed a desire to participate in novice
rides). We might even have to change our name from MKO riders to Southern
New Hampshire riders since we now have members from ZKO joining us.
The real neat thing is were also getting mileage credit and
trailblazing help from the Granite State Wheelpeople. How would
the MKO ZKO Velo Club sound? MZVC.....looks real Roman to me!?!
Any interest in a Name that Velo Club Contest? Winner gets to ride
    three more laps.

Credit is credit.....you get to see your name and cumulative
club mileage, along with the names of all the other club members
who have acheived a mileage amount over the cutoff. Its just a
little GSW recognition thing, but at the annual banquet awards
are given....need to talk to a GSW Board member about what they
are. Margaret Redfern (An MKO Rider) is a board member and can
probably fill us in on award levels. I remember seeing several
riders (like Ed Fisher) with Thousands of Miles credit at the
end of the year. BTW, only GSW sanctioned rides qualify for
mileage credit with the GSW. The Tuesday night ride is a sanctioned
GSW Ride......get it? Yes the NVC riders were there, but they
went out in another group, although, judging from the rabbits in
our lead pack, they may have been racing :-)
    						Jerry
    P.S.
Were you one of the Lunch Time riders that beat up on the
lone runner in the North Lot last Tuesday? The word going around
MKO now is that a *band* of DEC ANGELS is on the loose at lunch
time harrasing lone joggers for kicks :-) :-).

    	Thanks, but I needed a munchkin-frame (16") bike. I ended up
getting a GT Karakoram. It's great being able to laugh at
potholes and the like. On my Univega road bike I'm cursing
and/or crying at them. I think the bike can take much more
punishment than my body can, though. It's incredible how much
you can "hammer" on them without inflicting any damage.

Now we can start a rumor that a Mountain Bike Rider was seen by
some Audabon observers on the infamous Merrimack Fire Roads,
startling wild life with Wheelies. All kidding aside, have you
ever tried the MKO fire roads at lunch? Might be a good
conditioning ride for some of us looking to get the most out
of a lunch hour, since there aren't that many hills on the
roads in the area. Not that I've conquered Natticook yet :-) ,
but I'll bet the fire roads would be a great workout, if security
doesn't get upset. I hear they lightened up on letting cross
country skiers use them this winter, mostly due to the influence
of the Life Center. Anybody know how Security/Facilities feels
about us using the Fire Roads at lunch time?

579.25Fire Road LocationsAIMHI::JSMITHBikes Spoke_n HereWed May 11 1988 13:3917
There are several *old* vehicle paths thru the forest around MKO.
I am told that they are left over from the timbering days and were
used to gain quick access to extinguish brush fires, hence, Fire
Roads. There are also Utility Roads. The one I am most familiar
with from my cross country running days is the one that goes up
to the Microwave Tower on the hill opposite MKO1. Its has the
potential to be a great hill climb on a mountain bike. The other
flatter, roads I'm familiar with are the fire roads that can be
assessed from Camp Sargent heading out toward route 101A. They
are easily distinguished by the *no trespassing* Digital Property
Signs. Security never bothered me when I ran on these trails, but
I suspect you might tweak their interest if you started *blasting*
over them in dirt machine. Let us know how you make out if you
ride them, and also put together a map that others can use to keep
from getting lost back there. You might also want to share this
info in the MKO facility bike route note.
