I am interested in getting back into bicycling again. About 10 years ago, I had a Peugeot which I enjoyed very much. However, having been away from the sport for quite some time, I am no longer familiar with the various brands. I would be very interested in your recommendations. I am looking for a moderately priced 10-speed bike, i.e. $300 range, perhaps. I would be using it for mainly for recreation and exercise. I want a bike that can tolerate taking 20-50 mile trips once in a while, although long trips would be the exception rather than the norm. I have seen a lot of Japanese bikes advertised lately. Are they any good? Please feel free to recommend brands as well as bike shops in the Central Mass area. Many thanks in advance.

Hi, I'll stick my neck out and recommend the Miyata 312. I helped a friend of mine by one last spring. He was very happy with it. It cost him $284 at a ski shop in Waltham. There are tons of good bikes around in the price range you are looking. Do you what type of riding the bike will be for, day trips or is low maintainance important if so you might want to check out mountain bikes as they tend to need, or at least get :-), little care. What I have recommended to people who asked me what type of bike to get is try a test-ride on a mountain bike. A lot of people have come back sold on them. Joe | |||||
