FYI: A friend of mine organizes bike trips to China. He's the North American representative for a firm based in Hong Kong. I spoke at length with him recently, and I'm definitely going on one of these excursions; they sound great! Biking is the way to see China. If you're inside a tour bus, there's no connection to the people or sights. But, you already know this... The trips take about 14 days and cost about $2,000. The pace is easy, 35 miles per day. Once you are there, it pays to visit other locations, both inside China (the WALL) and the greater orient as well. (Tickets from Hong Kong to Thailand run about $200.) If you are interested, send me mail (CLT::CRIMMIN) or contact him directly. He also gives slide presentations for interested parties. Call Russell, in Newton, MA at this number: 617-965-6712. peterc

So far, no comments on the enticement of biking in China. My pal is designing a brochue for the trip. To help him out, I've been trying to think of questions that people will want answered by the pamphlet. Other than the obvious logistical info, addresses, etc. is there anything special that YOU (the experts) would want to know about such a trip? peter | |||||

yes: i've been interested in touring china, but i have dietary restrictions that i'm concerned might rule out a trip there (i don't speak the language, and i've had trouble in france where they more or less eat what we eat here). also, a general description of sleeping arrangements -- when i'm on a bike trip, my comfort level is greatly increased when i have a decent bed to sleep in (camping and biking don't mix well for me, for example) liz |
