DEC Hudson is having its Health and Fitness Festival
again this year. Cindy Spencer (OBSESS::SPENCER) has asked
if anyone would want to demonstrate bicycling.
DEC employees are involved in several different bike
activities that can be demonstrated or talked about. Even
different clubs, like the WRC or the Nashoba Valley
Pedalers, and rides, such as the Pan Mass Challenge, are
welcome to bring pamphlets and representatives to the fair.
Some areas of cycling that can be represented at the fair:
1. Recreational (sport) riding.
2. Touring
3. Racing
4. Triathlon Riding
All of the above involve telling interested people about:
1. Club activities
2. Bikes
3. Mechanics
4. Clothing
5. Riding (training, tours)
6. Races
Ideas for Demonstrations.
Demonstrations could consist of:
1. Displays of a touring bike, sport and racing bike.
2. Someone(s) on the rollers.
3. Riding/training routes.
4. Racing routes.
5. Gizmos like cyclometers, heart rate monitors: how
to use.
6. Clothing.
Page 2
7. Lists of races/rides for the year.
Items to bring to the booth:
1. Touring bike
2. Panniers, bags
3. Racing bike
4. Aluminum frame, steel frame bikes
5. Recumbent bike
6. Anybody got SIS stuff to show?
7. The new pedals
8. Rollers
9. Wind trainer (to compare with rollers)
10. Cyclometer
11. Heart rate monitor
12. Club information (rides, how to join your club)
13. Clothing
14. Race results (some people at DEC race...let's let
'em know about it)
15. And VIDEO TAPES!!!
Because there is so much activity here in the notes file,
it would be great if we could pull together a group to spend
a small amount of time at the booth to explain to people
what cyclists do...anywhere from people just getting back
into cycling (as mentioned in the notes) to those who have
raced or toured (again, as mentioned in the notes). For
example, we can bring in the rollers and spin for awhile.
No more than four hours on the rollers though :-)
Staffing the booths:
We need to get enough people to show up just to spend a
little while at the booth. We don't need to spend a lot of
time organizing, just so that we know someone will show up
with equipment that we need, i.e. rollers, cyclometer,
bikes, pamphlets about the clubs etc.

Health Fair Information:
Below is the message from Cindy on general guidelines:
---------------------------------------------
The hours for the show are **10-5 Oct6 and 8-2 Oct7**.
Let me know if you need anything special - table, outlet.
Also what times you will be available. We have found that
booths just giving out pamphlets sometime don't get the
interest that a booth that has a person covering to answer
questions. The idea of emphasizing the physical value of
riding in the presentation is a great idea.
**Yes, you can mention other local clubs to which Dec
employees belong**.
If you have any other questions, either call or send a
message.
Cindy Spencer X4510 OBSESS::SPENCER
---------------------------------------------
Action:
To take it from here, I guess we should sign in here as to
what we'd like to do, or mail me a note. If we can get
enough to staff the booth for a reasonable portion of the
fair, then let's go for it. Note that there is really
minimal work here: The booth is set up for us. We just
bring in some gear and show up for awhile. If we bring in
Videos, we'll need to steal a VCR. To pass out information,
for example road club/ride info, just show up with
pamphlets, propaganda, etc. Once we get together, we can
notify Cindy.

I'll show up and bring my racing bike with a cyclocomputer and
my wind trainer for at one of the days. I'm i won't be racing
for both days and it sounds like a lot of fun.
I can be reached at svcrus::crane or 223-7553 i do work second
shift though, so I don't get in until 3 p.m. but I'm sure could
schedule the time for this.

OK, if you don't get (m)any better offers I'll demonstrate:-
a) Taxc rollers; which are rollers with fans. (2 fer 1 deal)
b) A Vitus framed bike (Al).
c) A single speed; fixed gear bike, for *REAL* pain.
d) Heart rate monitor, with ear clip.
e) Solar Cateye.
f) Poor form.
g) Flakey knees.
h) Falling from rollers.
i) A poorly healed shoulder break.
j) Some Mt. Washington T-shirts.
k) 220 - (60% of age), this will probably be in combination with
item h) above, it could give i) another chance too.
l) Backwards racing, if anyone else wants to bring a fixed. I'm real
slow at this (such a come_on line) havn't done it in a while, but its
good for a laugh. Nothing to do with fitness, but it helps bike
handling skills a bit.
m) Cross hands racing, if anyone else will.
n) Flip outs if anyone else wants a wheelie contest. (I'll only
do a couple, 'cos it hurts the back of my head when I land.)

o) That total lack of maintenance doesn't really matter.
It goes, doesn't it ? It may be dirty, creaks and groans a little bit,
but it still goes.

Reg,
If you didn't work for DIGITAL, you could be a comedian. I
think I'll come down and bring my first-aid kit.
BTW, you wouldn't hurt the head if your wore a helmet.

Ya gotta be a comedian to work 'ere !

Reg....how about you and I demonstrate how two completely different
cyclists can get along perfectly on a Counterpoint. You demonstrate
the thin, wirey, racing type, and I'll play the role of the Pudgy Fred.
You be the Captain, and I the fearless stoker!
October 6th looks like a good day, but I may have a commitment on
the 7th.
Maybe you can handle Opus alone on the 7th?

re .6 Not this year Fred ! This thin, wirey, racing type
is currently running about 10 Kilos over target. What's the wheelbase
on the recombinant anyway ?, think we could get it up on rollers
?, Y'know, a coupla 2x4s to extend the side rails, daisy chained
rubber bands from office supplies to make an extra long belt to
the front roller, *IMPROVISE* a bit, creative engineering.

Health and Fitness Festival Setup
1 SETTING UP THE EQUIPMENT.
Monday after noon, Oct 5 is a good time to bring the larger
equipment like the rollers and trainers to the Hall of the
White Mist in HLO1. The room will be locked at night. I'll
probably drop my rollers off on Monday, but bring the bike
in the mornings of Tuesday and Wednesday as I may want to
ride those days. If you can't do it then or don't want to,
it'll be fine just to bring in the equipment when you want
to.
2 EQUIPMENT
Bring in whatever you want to demonstrate. Don't forget
club info too!
3 SCHEDULES
As we're all on different schedules, and they've given us
short notice, my suggestion is to leave it flexible, at our
own convenience. It would be good to be able to ensure
complete coverage for all day Tuesday and Wednesday, but we
can't guarantee it, and we'll want more than one person at
the booth anyway. As a first pass though, drop me a note as
to when you want to be there and roughly when club members
might want to volunteer some time, just to get an idea.
Thanks,
Charlie
