I definitely second Ed's opinion. Unless a number of doctors
have all concluded about the same thing, I would not take
such a drastic step yet.

Another vote for a second opinion. The arthritis in my knee has
improved since I've been riding. The key is to take it EEEEEasy
and use your gearing to work for you. Also stretch gently before
and cool down slowly after riding. When I first came back to cycling
after a 20-year layoff, I could only ride a few blocks. Now 5 miles
is in range.
