353.0. "I begin to commute/Friend crashes" by AMUN::CRITZ (Ya know what I mean, Vern) Thu Jun 18 1987 09:40
Well, I (personally) have some good news and some bad news.
The good news: I finally got everything right so that I could
start commuting to work from Nashua. The trip in this morning
was a little over 19 miles. I wonder how I'll feel tonight
after a day of work and another 19 miles home. Shouldn't be
too bad at all.
The bad news: I found out last night that a riding friend was
in an accident riding to work Tuesday. I went right over to
see how he was. I guess he was on a really rough road, with
a lot of high spots (like frost heaves). Anyway, he tried to
steer around on (fairly violently) and the front wheel
collapsed. The bike needs a new front wheel and may need a
new fork. He broke two ribs, his right wrist, scraped his
helmet, and has road rash on both knees and his left shoulder.
Looks like he won't be able to ride for about six weeks. I asked
him how he was mentally (is he scared to get on the bike), and
he said he didn't think so. In fact, he was complaining about
how much riding he was going to miss. I suggested that maybe
he could set the wind trainer up with blocks under the front,
thus giving him enough balance that he could pedal without
having to lean on his wrists.
Anyway, some good news (for me) and some bad news (for the both
of us).

| I visited my friend Wednesday night. While talking I told him
the following joke:
Tammy Fae Bakker went to a beautician who removed all her
makeup. Do you know who they found?
Jimmy Hoffa
My poor friend was moaning and laughing at the same time. I
wouldn't advise joke telling around someone with broken ribs.
I'm sorry, Bill. He'll probably ride me into the ground when
we next ride together.
