350.0. "Need expert help on Dura Ace problem" by GENRAL::SHROYER () Wed Jun 17 1987 11:10

    HELP! I am having some problems with my bike. I am getting
    a great deal of scratches on my right chain stay (please excuse
    the spelling). The scratches are about half way between the bottom
    bracket and the rear drop out. I believe/suspect that they are
    created when I shift from my large chain ring to my small chain
    ring. Occasionally, (maybe once every 10th shift) I will hear
    a "ching" as I shift. This noise is not from the chain ring.

    Also, the scratches are on the side of the stay.

    It is a Fuso, racing geometry, dura ace components, six speed
    freewheel, 13-23, 53/42 chain rings, 175 cranks. The chain is a
    shimano 600. I am going to replace the chain today.

    I have taken it to two very good bike shops in Colorado Springs,
    and they are stumped.

    Has anyone else heard of, or had such a problem? I am basically
    getting a little desparate and would really appreacitate help.

    Thanks

    I hate to say it, but it sounds pretty normal to me. You can take
    a link out of the chain to increase the tension, but your 19-23
    upshift may suffer. You have to try it to find out. You can get a
    little stick-on chainstay protector from Specialized that will keep
    the chainstay from getting scratched any further.

    Sounds normal to me as well. Any really bumpy road will cause your
    chain to bounce all over the place. One place it likes the most
    is your right chain stay. The more you ride on the small ring (42)
    the more it will happen. In a 42-13 a small bump will cause the
    chain to hit the stay. So the suggestion in .1 would be mine as
    well. Replaceing the chain will not solve the problem. As long as
    its still good I would use it.
350.3Is the "ching" the thing?SSDEVO::ADVICEYour Fuso ain't nothingWed Jun 17 1987 15:487
    The "ching" might be your chain releasing from being pinched
    between the derailleur cage and the inside of the chainring.
    Check to see that the derailleur isn't more than a few mm
    above the large chainring. Or maybe the cage travels too
    far inside, and the chain becomes completely derailled (temporarily?).

350.4something to check, while you're at it...SUSHI::KMACDONALDDrywall Poster Child for 1990Tue Mar 12 1991 09:125
From the description, sounds fairly normal to me - however, you may wish
to check that when your chain is on the small freewheel cog that the
chain has enough clearance to miss the chainstay - I've run across
combos of frame, freewheel and hub where this was a problem.
