331.0. "Custom shoes?" by TSG::HATCHER () Mon Jun 01 1987 18:37

    Anyone know someone who makes custom biking shoes?

    It seems that the European and American shoemakers cater only to
    small sizes.  I wear a 14, which is about a 50.  I can't find
    anyone who makes >48. I'd be willing to go custom for a good shoe
    that fits. At this point I'd take a touring or a racing shoe, lace
    up or velcro.

    And believe me I've already heard all the jokes about wear the boxes,
    etc.

    too1 If I find a place for her tennis and biking shoes I'll let
    you know!

    I read an article in a bike magazine about two companies in the
    UK which continue to make high quality leather cycling shoes. One
    of the them use an outline of your foot to custom make the shoes.

    I ordered a pair through the post for my neighbour here in Switzerland.
    We had to supply his normal shoe size (in local measurements), an
    outline of both his feet whilst standing and wearing cycling socks,a
    number of measurements of various parts of the foot and a notation
    of any peculiarities of his feet.

    They were delivered within a reasonable short time via surface mail
    (we did not include enough postage for airmail). My neighbour swears
    by them and is totaly satisfied.

    The company has a range of shoes from racing to touring and even
    a winter model with a fleece lining. They are all made of good quality
    leather including the soles.

    If anyone is interested in a copy of the article, send me a note
    with your mail stop and I'll get one off to you.

    Cheers.
331.3Reynolds and SalsburyERLANG::BLACKTue Jun 02 1987 17:5414
    I havn't seen the article, but the shoemakers I know of are Reynolds
    and Pete Salsbury. Salsbury typically has a two year waiting list.

    I have bought two pairs of touring shoes from Reynolds via mail,
    bith while I was living in England. The first pair didn't fit,
    and they had to try again.

    I bought the second pair before I moved to the US, just to keep
    "in stock". They still are: the dam first pair won't wear out.

    I guess that means that I'm satisfied.

    My neighbour was dubious at first because he thought they were the
    wrong fit, in his case they seemed too long, the width was perfect.
    After trying them out, he discovered that he no longer gets that
    pinching in the toes that he used to get with his old shoes
    particularly on a longish ride where the feet swell a little.

    By the way it was Reynolds that we bought from.

    Cheers
331.5Try Duegi'sNAC::CAMPBELLThu Jun 04 1987 11:047

    A friend of mine just bought a pair of Duegi's (sp) from Nashbar.
    He wears a 13 shoe, and bought a 47 or 48 cycling shoe. He says
    that Duegi's are supposed to run big. Try 'em and see what happens

    I second that observation... the newer Duegi's run large and wide
    compared to the other majors.
