325.0. "Windsor history?" by RAINBO::BROWN () Wed May 27 1987 10:48

A friend recently had a 5+ year old Windsor Carrera touring
10 speed, originally purchased in California, ripped off and
would like to find out if it can be replaced. Does anybody
know if the Windsor brand is still in existence? Did they
change their name to Lotus or get bought out by Lotus?

    Thanks.

I was just down at Catagory 1 Cycle Goods in Tyngsbourgh and
the owner Paul was working on a Windsor. I would suggest stopping
and talking to him. Cat 1 is in the Flint Plaza take exit 34 and
take a right you can't miss it.

Windsor is Mexican, and Lotus is Japanese. Maybe Lotus bought them
out, but I'm pretty sure that they didn't, and Windsor, like a lot
of Mexican companies, has been hit by hard times. Their quality
wasn't up to par with the Japanese or even the Taiwanese.

Re: .2 Windsor used to be Mexican (I owned a carrerra), but sold
out to a Japanese company about 3-4 years ago. I've seen the japanese
version occasionally, mostly at International Bicycles in Brighton.

The new Windsors were not as good as the Mexican version, and had
reduced the quality of the components, and changed the geometry.

    It was a great bike.

Hi-Gear Cyclery of either Gillette or Sterling NJ (I can never keep
those two towns straight) had an orange Windsor on display for quite
a few years. I wouldn't be surprised if it was still there. I wonder
if they'd be willing to part with it after all this time.

I have a windsor 'Touring Elite' that I bought @ International cycles
about 8-10 years ago. It cost $400 back then, then went up in cost
and now are no longer available. It has a beautiful Columbus frame
and forks. There are some good components and some bad components
on it (the wheels stink) but it has suntour derailers and sugino
crank. It's a great bike and very comfortable to ride. I'm considering
selling it because I would like to get a mountain bike. If any one
is interested they may send mail to ISWISS::STOREY.
