316.0. "Boston=>Newport RI? Route?" by PIXEL::GOFF () Mon May 18 1987 15:38

I'm planning on biking down to Newport, R.I. this July with some friends. The
only problem is that we're having a hard time planning a route. I haven't been
able to locate any bicycle maps with routes going in that direction. Even a
detailed road map would be helpful. I'd appreciate any advice, suggestions,
etc...

Why not go to a bookstore and look for those atlases of
the states you need. In the bookstore at Pheasant Lane
Mall, there are whole books of maps for Maine, NH, Mass,
and RI. Of course, they don't tell you the condition of
the road surface, but they should be sufficient for your
    	purposes.

While I can't help much for the first part of the route, the last
part is familiar territory because of "The Flattest Century in the
East" run by NBW out of Tiverton, RI every September. From Taunton
south there are some beautiful roads. I'd try to stay east of 24
going between Fall River and New Bedford and angle over to Tiverton
or wherever you are crossing over to the island. The northern half
of Newport Island is not a fun place to bike: lots of high speed
4 lane undivided highway. The southern part is nice, though. Don't
even think of trying to bike the Cliff Walk, though. Lots of steps,
2' wide paths, etc (guess who tried it). - Chris
