286.1 | Early season overtraining? | BUFFO::BUFFO | | Tue Apr 28 1987 19:34 | 11 |
| My roommate, who's raced for 5+ years, suggested that my
knee pains (only when I go down stairs) were because I'm
riding too hard too early in the season. He says the
Italian CONI training manual says don't push hard on the
pedals until you've logged 1000 miles into the season.
Perhaps you qualify, but I don't (yet).
Next day, my knees felt much better. Hope yours do too.
Regards,
David Buffo

When you say the back of your knee, do you mean the back of your
kneeCAP or the muscles behind the knee joint?
Pain under the kneecap is usually from overexertion, as in going
hard too early in the season. Pain behind the knee joint is common
early in the season. You've probably been lifting during the winter,
and your calves are very strong. The muscles in back of the knee
are considerably weaker at this point in time. After your finished
with your base mileage your muscletone should even out. When riding,
make sure you stand up and stretch for a few strokes every so often
to fully extend your leg, stretching these muscles. I've already
assumed you've been stretching before the ride.

| I think you've spotted the problem. I've been running this
winter, not riding, and I haven't been stretching enough.
I once saw a chart with stretches for cyclists. Anyone know
where I could find one?

| RE: .3
I have seen the stretching charts in places like EMS and running
stores. A good one is by the publisher of Runner's World (Dave
Anderson ??).
If you can't find one, call me up and I'll see if I can still find
mine and xerox it for you. (617-244-3436).
In general, I think bike racers do not stretch nearly enough. Most
every other sport recognizes the importance of stretching but bikies
seem not to. Any bike racer should be able to at least touch the
floor, if not more.
