ELEVENTH ANNUAL TOUR OF NEW ENGLAND
MAY 23, 23 25, 1987
This trip touches all six New England states in three days and
goes through some of the most beautiful scenery in the central New
England area. On Saturday, I will be at the intersection of Route 16
and Route 30 in West Newton at 4.am. Newton is the first town just
west of Boston. For myself and other participants, it is about ten
miles to the intersection of Route 16 and Route 30. ( I include that
ten miles as part of the 146 mile total you will have to do the first
day. ) I will leave West Newton promptly at 4.15 am. If you feel
especailly slow or fast, you may start earlier or later. Since we are
leaving before sunrise, lights are required, though this probably will
be the only night riding we will do.
We will head southwest, away from Boston and we will ride through
the northwestern corner of Rhode Island and the northeastern corner of
Connecticut. Then we will cross beautiful central Massachussetts to
the southwestern corner of New Hampshire. The terrain the first day
is moderately rolling and we will spend the night in Brattleboro,
Vermont at the Susse Chalet Motor Lodge.
The second day we will ride 119 miles across New Hampshire. The
roads are quite hilly ( mountainous terrain ) all the way across. We
will spend Sunday night at the Quality Inn in Dover, New Hampshire.
On Monday we will ride into Maine and back to West Newton (
through some city-like suburbs of Boston ) covering about 85 miles
over rolling terrain.
The total trip is 350 miles, mostly with little traffic and/or
wide shoulders. You should not come on this trip unless you have done
100+ miles per day on VERY DIFFICULT TERRAIN for a two day
back-to-back ride. If you feel during the trip that you cannot handle
the distance, you are never more than 100 miles from Boston. You
should plan to travel about ten miles per hour, including stops. We
start Saturday, rain or shine. Most of the riding is on numbered
routes, but there are one or two segments of back roads each day.
Since I have found it impossible to keep together a group with more
than 8 bicyclists, everyone will travel at their own pace.
Road Maps will be provided for the numbered route sections.
Detailed instructions or maps drawn by me, will be provided for the
back road sections ; in addition some of the back roads will be marked
with arrows painted on the pavement. Cue sheets will also be
provided.
The fee is $60.00 due April 15th, and covers motel costs in
Brattleboro and Dover. After April 9th the fee is 65 and only if I
can still make reservation sfor you, becuase this is a holiday
weekend. All other costs along the way come out of your own pocket.
With the fee, include the RELEASE FORM filled out. Make the check to
JACEK RUDOWSKI. Once I receive the fee and the release form, I will
Page 2
send you a list of what to bring. You will receive maps and cue
sheets no later than one week before the trip.
We are going on a holiday wekeend and all rooms at the Susse
Chalet Motor lodge fill up early. We stay at the Susse Chalet Motor
Lodge because it is next door to a fantastic restaurant called the
Steak Out. The Susse Chalet does not have roll away beds. There are
always vacancies at the Quality Inn, and they have roll away beds. I
will accept late signups on a waiting list. If someone drops out
before the trip, I will refund their money if I can get someone to
take their place.
If you want to room with someone in particular at the overnights,
I would like you to mail in your reservations together.
If you want to reduce Saturday's mileage to about 100 miels, you
can start out on Friday and stay at a motel near Mendon. Mendon is
the town from which Jerry Campbell is starting out. For information
about lodging near Mendon, send a sase to Jerry Campbell, 99
Blackstone Street, Mendon, MA 01756. You will have to make these
reservations yourself and let Jerry Campbell know, so he can call you
when I leave Milford so we can meet onthe road.

| I have done the Tour of New England (thrice).
Am undecided about this year.
The best overall advice I can give is be prepared for any type of
weather. Also, if you wish to cut the large mileage on the first
day (146), you can stay at Jerry Campbells in Mendon (near R.I.
line) MA, on Friday nite.
The Steak Out, restaurant in brattleboro VT, is great. Has all
types of main courses plus a salad bar that ranks with the best.
If there is anything in particular you want to know, let me know.
