| 258.2 | Mt. Wachusetts? | RAINBO::BROWN |  | Thu Apr 09 1987 16:04 | 14 |
| | Westminster always has Mt. Wachusetts to train on. Right now you
    have to pick up the bike to traverse a couple of ski trails, but
    on the other hand you'll be the only one on top of the mountain!
    The Park Service (or whatever they're called there) doesn't seem
    to mind bikers going around the gates. There is also currently
    a lot of gravel on the access road to the top. When the snow has
    melted and the roads are clean it takes about 45 minutes to get
    to the top and about 45 seconds to come down.

    I don't know of any long, flat, wide stretches in the Westminster
    area to train on, however.

| 258.3 | Quicker up, but slower down; for me anyway.... | MENTOR::REG | Who is Sylvester McCoy | Thu Apr 09 1987 16:59 | 9 |

    	re .2	Huh ?

    	From the gate it takes more like 15 minutes to the top and 3
    minutes back down. From the bottom parking lot, where the chinzy
    ski haus and fake gift shoppes are its about 20 minutes.

| 258.4 | Dangerous to assume you have that hill to yourself... | MENTOR::REG | Who is Sylvester McCoy | Thu Apr 09 1987 17:26 | 16 |
|  |
    	re .2 and .3	I forgot to mention that this hill can be very
    dangerous. Until they open the gates to motorized traffic it is
    unsafe to assume that down riders will be taking any notice of the
    one way system or the keep to the right rule. *EVERYONE* thinks
    they have the mountain to themselves after the last week-end in
    October; it just ain't so. There are some BONZAI riders who seem
    to have bets on with their buddies that they can make it down without
    touching their brakes (they don't know that I'm the only one who
    can actually do that and live through it). Select a low enough
    gear that you can ride a very straight line, don't zig-zag on
    the way up unless you are prepared to absorb several hundred RUKEs
    from another cyclist by being centre punched with a front wheel.

| 258.5 | Joe Isuzu times | MOSAIC::BROWN |  | Fri Apr 10 1987 10:49 | 9 |
| | Yeah, I was sort of exagerating both times; it SEEMS that much!
    I usually approach from the Southeast and go up the "back" way and come
    down the skihaus way. I consider the bottom of the mountain at about
    400 feet above sea level, whereas the gate is at 1050 and the top is at
    exactly 2000. I went up there last week (and was the only one at
    the top) and had to stay on the brakes the *whole* way down due to
    water and gravel. If you don't, coming down there is a long stretch
    and then a slight left turn; just around that turn is a ski trail
    across the road!

| 258.6 | 2 route suggestions | NEPTUN::WORRELL |  | Mon May 11 1987 15:41 | 8 |
| | When you get to Wachusett, stop at the visitor center (where the gate
    is) and pick up a map of 3 area routes, at least one of which goes
    through Westminster.

    Also, rt. 68 has some wide and flat sections on which I have seen
    cyclists (including myself).

| | There is a biathalon in Wellesley on Sunday, May 31 at 9:30. I
    think it is being put on by the Wellesley raquette club? $20.
