256.0. "BIKE SHOW" by ZEKE::MCCARTHY () Wed Apr 08 1987 09:25

    	Is there such a thing as a "Bike Show" ??
    I'm a skier and the best place to get ski equipment is at
    a ski show.

    There's one in NYC every spring, although it's for trade only. There
    are very little retail sales booths, just for souveniers. On the
    last day, you might be able to fanagle some display items out of
    the dealers, but in general, there's no retail sales.

    "Bike Show"s are normally held this time of year in places like
    New York, California, and others by the manufacturers for DEALERS.
    If you can get tickets through your friendly bike shop, you can
    go to the New York show. Boston doesn't have one. I think some
    good deals can be made on display items in the last hours of the
    show. I don't think items are normally for sale.
      For the average rider, the closest think to a show is the exhibits
    at big bike rallies. The one on Long Island is the middle of July.
    I'm arranging the exhibits for the New England Area Rally (NEAR)
    at Durham, NH (at UNH) at the end of July. There will be major
    manufacturers from (possibly) Shimano on down, and a bunch of bike
    shops and distributers. Most will have lots of stuff for sale,
    but don't expect any huge bargins. It'll be like walking into the
    biggest bike shop you've ever been in with lots of people to talk
    to, from manufacturer's reps., to dealers, to tour organizers and
    bike knick-knack pedalers (posters, sculpture, etc). - Chris
256.3"The Big Event" -- don't forget the burgersJAWS::MHARRISMacThu Apr 09 1987 13:557
    Doesn't "The Big Event" qualify as a sort of poor man's bike show
    -- even though it's nothing like those events held at the Commonwealth
    Pier, Bayside Expo Center, etc.?  It's a one-day new-used-buy-sell-
    swap-rides-food bash held outdoors every spring in Concord, MA.
    Anyone know when/where this year's edition will take place?

256.4THE BIG EVENTJETSAM::HANAUERMike...Bicycle~to~Ice~CreamThu Apr 09 1987 14:3011
I was the chairperson for last years Big Event. It is held every
two years, alternating with NEAR.

Thus, the next Big Event should be in April 1988, if the precendent
holds true.

The Big Event has rides, food, festivity, and is a forum for
cyclists to sell/buy their "surplus" sporting equipment. Thus, it is
mostly used (like new?) stuff there.

    re. .3 Please give info on Boston shows with bike stuff in them!
256.6Maybe the dealers/mfr'rs could organize one...JAWS::MHARRISMacFri Apr 10 1987 16:079
    Re .5:

    Sorry -- I didn't mean to imply that there are bike shows in Boston
    -- I was just trying to contrast the kind of "show" represented
    by The Big Event with the extravaganzas one encounters at the Bayside
    Center, etc. -- N.E. Auto Show, boat shows, home shows.....you know,
    $$$$$$$$$$.
