191.0. "Taking the Bus" by EAGLE1::CAMILLI () Tue Dec 30 1986 14:32
(From the January/February, 1987, issue of Bicycle Rider magazine.
It doesn't say "advertisement" anywhere, though there's a number
to circle on the reader service card.)
Columbia's Toast to the Past
Memories are made of this . . . a cushy, leather seat
with crash rails, a spring fork and wheel lock, two-tone
green-and-cream paint, a light, a chain guard, and whitewall
tires. It all adds up to the Columbia Five Star 1952 works
replica.
Built to commemorate the American manufacturer's 75th
anniversary, the Five Star was appointed the official pace
vehicle for the 1986 Coors Classic and is winning the hearts
and minds of a whole new generation of cyclists.
Weighing in at a then-typical 74 pounds, the limited
edition balloon-tire cruiser is available at dealerships
nationwide or from Columbia Manufacturing Company, Department BR,
Box 1230, Westfield, Massachusetts 01086, at a suggested
retail price in the $400 range. The sleek lines recall a simpler
day - the post-war Eisenhower Fifties, an era of good-time rock
'n' roll, sock hops, Bermuda shorts, bubble gum, and mellow
summer nights.

191.2 | what to wear with it? | NOVA::FISHER | | Wed Dec 31 1986 06:08 | 8 |
| I am wondering about an appropriate period costume to wear with
it. Lycra's out, as are cleats. I know, I have a picture of
me in 1952 somewhere at home. Probably need a crewcut or a butch
to start with, that won't look out of place at all. What next?
Penny Loafers and White socks? A white t-shirt? Hafta watch the
reruns of Father Knows Best and Ozzie and Harriet, I guess.

Thats a bargain at todays inflated prices. $5.55/lb ***WOW***
re: .1
Wear Black High tops, white sloppy sox with grease stains, black knickers
worn below the shins, and a white short sleeve shirt with gull wing collars,
preferably curling up at the end.
Get an old fedora and pin the rim up back and front with large safety pins.
Now, if that doesn't win the "Norman Rockwell Memorial Best Dressed Biker"
prize, what will?
And if you don't know what a pair of knickers are, ask your grandfather.
Ask your grandmother about wearing them pulled down below the shins.
(I delivered newspapers in that outfit, on that bike! sigh)

191.4 | Now I know how it stayed so well-preserved | DECC::AMARTIN | Alan H. Martin | Sun Jan 02 1994 11:04 | 6 |
| Re .0:
It looks to me like one of these commemerative models is hanging on the wall at
Shorty's Mexican Restaurant in Litchfield, NH. See topic 1072 in OCTAVE::EATS
(q.v.) for directions.
