I would like to replace my current hubs with a set of sealed bearing hubs. The current Performance catalog lists the following hubs: $35.95 595g Suzue Sealed Hubset $39.95 475g Ofmega CX Sealed Bearing Hubset $39.95 539g Performance Competition Sealed Bearing Hubset $44.95 536g Suntour Cyclone Sealed Hubset $47.95 532g Suntour Sprint Hubset $49.95 576g Specialized Sealed Hubset $64.95 536g Suntour Superbe Pro Hubset $74.95 479g Mavic Model 500RD Hubset If anyone has experience with these or other sealed bearing hubsets, I would apreciate any information you could provide. If it makes a difference, I weigh about 165 and ride mostly on club rides (20-50 miles) and an occasional weekend tour. Total of 800 miles this year. The hubs I have now are a set of cheap "sealed mechanism" hubs that came on my Nishiki. I have already had one rear cone crumble. My previous bike had sealed bearings which needed NO adjustment or care in fifteen years. -John A. Wasser

155.1 | Anything *CAN* break... | EUREKA::REG_B | Bicycle break-dancer | Mon Oct 06 1986 14:23 | 13 |
Only a sample size of one, but I broke the rear axle in my Specialized hub. I discovered this the week-end after the Mt. Washington race, I was putting a normal cluster back on the bike. The point of fracture was just inside the right hand bearing, where the threads start, which I think is the weakest (though not the highest stressed) part of any axle due to stress raisers. I honestly don't know how, when or where this happened, it could have been while riding, while changing clusters (26 f x 28 r torques 'em on real tight on Mt. W) or when I did the shoulder break. re .1 George Gamache claimed he had never heard of one of these breaking, so his super smart inventory control system didn't have one in stock. He did spend a lot of time with me matching it up and striping just the axle part out of a set, since I didn't need the cones. I bought a couple of the sealed bearings while I was there, about $4.25 each, since two of my other wheel sets also have these hubs. Reg

I would be interested in building another pair of wheels for next spring. Sealed hubs might be a nice idea, but does anyone (CdH, f'rinstance) know if they are available threaded both sides for fixed ? Reg

I've been looking for a set of sealed track hubs for years. I spoke with Phil Wood at the NY show a couple of years ago, he could make them up custom but had no plans to put them into production. CdH |
