139.0. "What's it worth?" by NACHO::DAUGHERTY () Fri Aug 22 1986 11:52

I want to sell the bicycle described below and am interested
in getting an idea of what it is worth. I purchased it new
approx 10 years ago. The bicycle has under 400 miles on it
and is completely original. It is in excellent condition with
only one (minor) fall. The chain is getting a bit brittle and
the tires are 10 years old, but other than that it is close to
	perfect.

Raleigh Competition	23 1/2" Reynolds 531 double butted frame
tubes, 531 forks. T.A. (Specialites) cotter-
less cranks and chainwheel (42x52), Cyclo
				competition freewheel (14,15,17,19,21).
				Huret (Jubilee?) derailleurs, Normandy com-
				petition hubs, Weinmann centerpull brakes.
Hutchinson sewups. Brook saddle. Approx 22lbs.

	Thanks
	Chris

I have a virtually identical bike for sale. Mine is 21", and has
a number of upgrades, but a lot more than 400 miles.

I'm asking $300, which is half the cost of the closest current
equivalent bike. There are some very good low end bikes available
now, and this tends to depress the price of older bikes. I think
$300 is reasonable, but the final line is how much someone offers,
and how badly you want the bike gone.

BTW my Comp always felt 'nervous' and was tricky to ride in
the pack or no-hands. We put the frame on Paul Randazzo's frame
table last winter and found that the rear dropouts were misaligned.
Once we found the problem, it was easy to fix, and the bike rides
beautifully now. I'd always liked the bike, but now it is really
nice. I wouldn't consider selling it, but I had already ordered
a Ciocc frame when we found the problem. So now I have a much-too-good
    beater bike.

A used Comp would be a terrific entry-level racer for someone trying
to get started on a budget.

    	Good luck
