ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (AP) - A California woman, who put postponed
going to business school so she could train for the 3,107-mile Race
Across America, pedaled her bike across the Boardwalk finish line
Wednesday to win the women's division.
Elaine Mariolle, 29, of Berkeley, Calif., set a record in the
fifth annual race by completing the cross-country route in 10 days,
two hours, and four minutes, said Pete Rosten, a race official.
Pete Tenseyres, a 43-year-old nuclear engineer from Fall Brook,
Calif., won the men's division Monday night when he completed the
route in a record eight days, nine hours and 47 minutes.
Race officials said 20 men and six women started the race July 6
in Huntington Beach, Calif. Rosten said Mariolle was the fifth racer
to finish and that four or five others have dropped out because of
physical problems.
Mariolle was accepted to the UCLA Graduate School of Business
several years ago, but has deferred her admission to train for the
Race Across America, Rosten said.
She began bicycling three years ago and puts 15,000 miles a year
on her bike, he said.
Rosten said Tenseyres used an all-liquid diet during his days on
the road. Mariolle slept 90 minutes a night at most and traveled an
average of almost 400 miles a day, Rosten said.
Tenseyres and Mariolle each will receive $6,500. The remainder of
the $25,000 purse will be divided among those bicyclists who
complete the grueling race, Rosten said.

Pete Penseyres is quite an inspriration for those of us over 30 who are
supposed to be past our atlethic prime.

That's an average speed of about 16mph for over 3000 miles.
