98.0. "Knox Bike Trail in Massachusetts (HELP!)" by ADVAX::HACK () Fri Jul 11 1986 09:22

I have a promo map of Massachusetts with big pictures of thing
to visit in the general area of their true location (i.e. the map
puts the Boston Freedom Trail around Lexington.) There is a dashed
line running East/West across the state and is labeled the Knox
Bike trail. I've asked many people about this but no one seems
to know where it is or how to find out... Does anyone out there
    know about this trail? Thanks!

	Yeah. -See notes 38.0, 92.8, and 92.17. (I thought I put
a more detailed one in there, too, but couldn't find it.)

I talked to the people in the department that made the map,
and they don't know anything about it, though the person
listed as having approved the map (in the fine print) apparently
	still works there.

The State Division of Tourism people pointed me to the Berkshire
Hills Conference, since part of the trail is shown in the
western part of the state. (How's that for logic?) The
BHC turns out to be a private chamber of commerce-kind of
organization. They liked the sound of the map and asked me
	for a copy.

I got a few more from DEC's recruiting office and sent one.

I think it's part of the state's drive to draw tourists. There
seem to be bunches of people driving around searching for this
non-existent path. It's like the trick of not marking the streets
or putting misleading signs up. -The tourists end up leaving
later than they planned, since they can't find their ways out.

Maybe this is the kind of topic for "We Don't Knock". Is that
still on or coming back? Better yet, how about "Ask the Manager"
(also on 38). It might be better than the questions the Phoenix
	TV listing writer asks (Garboden?).

	Welcome to Massachusetts.

yeah, kind of like the idea of not putting up street signs, "If you don't know
where it is you don't belong there and if you do know where it is we can save
money because you don't need a sign."
98.3KNOX TRAIL MARKER IN OTISMURPHY::MOLLINWed Sep 17 1986 11:0510
THIS PAST AUGUST I WAS IN LENOX, MA. AT ONE OF THE TOURIST INFORMATION
BOOTHS. I PICKED UP A MAP FOR OTIS,MA BECAUSE IT HAD A PICTURE
OF A REVOLUTIONARY WAR STATUE LABLED "THE KNOX TRAIL MARKER, EAST
OTIS" THE MAP SHOWS THE LOCATION OF THE STATUE JUST OFF ROUTE 23
ALONG A DASHED LINE CALLED THE KNOX TRAIL. IT IS NOT DESIGNATED
AS A BIKE TRAIL. IF ANYONE WOULD LIKE THIS MAP SO THEY CAN AT LEAST
FIND A POINT ON THE TRAIL AND EXPLORE FROM THERE, I WILL BE HAPPY
TO SEND IT TO THE FIRST PERSON WHO ASKS.

BEFORE SENDING THE MAP ON TO LARRY I THOUGHT SOME OF YOU WOULD BE
INTERESTED IN THE INSCRIPTION ON THE MONUMENT, WHICH MIGHT GIVE
SOME CLUE TO THE ORIGIN OF THE DASHED LINES ON VARIOUS STATE MAPS.

"THROUGH THIS PLACE PASSED GENERAL HENRY KNOX IN THE WINTER OF
1775-1776TO DELIVER TO GENERAL GEORGE WASHINGTON AT CAMBRIDGE THE
TRAIN OF ARTILLERY FROM FORT TICONDEROGA TO FORCE THE BRITISH ARMY
TO EVACUATE BOSTON. ERECTED BY THE COMMONWEALTH OF MASSACHUSETS
    1927"
98.6...where once cannons rolled...JAWS::MHARRISMacWed Sep 24 1986 13:5311
As I recall from historical accounts, General Knox' delivery of
cannon from Fort Ticonderoga to Dorchester Heights was considered
a great feat of endurance and courage and came as a great surprise to the
British, who thought it impossible to accomplish in winter. Seems
to me the trip was re-enacted a few years back (<10) by some
neo-colonials and a few (small) cannon, traveling paved roads that
traced Knox' original route from Vermont to Dorchester. So it's
unlikely that the "Knox Bicycle Trail" is a bike trail as such --
just existing roads along a historical route.
