I have the lucky assignment of DECVILLE in Cannes France from September 3 through September 20. I am considering taking my bike so I can tour the French Riviera in my spare time. (It's a tough job, but somebody has to do it.) I read note 15 about european touring and it seems the jury is out about taking bikes on airplanes. What are your thoughts on taking my bike versus renting one there? What kind of bikes are available for rental in europe? How much do they cost to rent? Are bikes really cheaper there, enough to make it worth your while to buy there? BTW, I ride a Cannondale ST500 25in. Does the aluminum frame make it more rugged and less likely to fail? What about those heavy-duty plastic cases I see advertised, are they any good? They seem pretty expensive.

93.1 | Some thoughts on air travel | EUCLID::PAULHUS | Mon Jul 07 1986 15:02 | 16
I have never found a rental bike that fits me as well as my regular diamond frame bike. If you are just going to be bopping around, on and off the bike a bunch, maybe a rental would be OK. But for any serious riding (say over 30 miles), a bike that is adjusted to your preferences is important. If you are serious (been Fit Kit'ed or have changed stems to suit your desires, etc,) then you should take a bike that fits you. I kept my old bike when I got my new one so I would have a bike for rainy days and air travel. (I served well in Bermuda two years ago.) The good enclosures - inflatable cushions or hard shell - look to be the way to go if you only have your good bike. Otherwise (using supplied boxes) do a super job of padding it and maybe take the rear derraillure off for the trip. Many people have had the best luck when they can get the bike on the plane unboxed. It's treated with much more care then. At any rate, enjoy! - Chris
93.2 | How about renting one? | SUPER::CONNELL | Mon Jul 07 1986 18:20 | 3
I think you can rent a bike bag (a good one) from Wheel Works in Waverly Square, Belmont MA.
93.3 | Also in Tyngsboro... | VIKING::WASSER | John A. Wasser | Tue Jul 08 1986 11:45 | 10 |
You can rent bicycle bags at Catagory 1 Cyclegoods, just off Rt 3 and just south of NH. Take Rt.3 to Westford Rd./Tyngsboro exit (first exit north of Rt. 40) Head west about 1/2 mile to Flints Corner Plaza, just after yellow blinker. -John A. Wasser |
