The talk of bike racks in a previous note reminded me of a project I've had on the back burner for a while. I would like to build (or buy if the right product exists) a rack that will fit in the back of my small pickup truck. The rack I envision would hold 3-4 bikes and would be easy to install and remove for my weekly trips to the landfill and the lumber yard, etc. Does any know if such a rack is available commercially or if there are any Popular Mechanics type plans floating around? Thanks, Scott

A friend of mine used to have a wooden framework on floor and front of his truck bed. It was built like the bike racks (usualy metal) seen in many public areas. A wheel (front or rear) would sit between the bars of the bottom framework to keep the bike from rolling backward, the vertical framework would keep the bike from falling over. Eye bolts in the frame provide anchor points for elastic cords. -John A. Wasser | |||||

What a lot of racers do is buy just the bike mounting hardware for the La Prealpina racks, ie. no rails or gutter mounts, just the fittings that you clamp you fork into. They mount these to a small frame of 2x4 or 2x6 that's custom fitted to your particular bed. This way you get the advantages of a good, stable mounting system that's not jury rigged. Some folks would rather do their own design completely, if you feel comfortable doing so, go for it. CdH |
