87.0. "Does a race schedule exist????" by DSSDEV::CAMPBELL () Wed Jun 25 1986 10:28

Does anyone know of a Bicycle race schedule???? Something like the
Greater Boston Track Club Schedule for running must exist somewhere.
    Shouldn't it???????

    There are several sources:

    - Velo-News contains a good listing every month (available at racing
    oriented shops)

    - Sportscape has an OK listing, featuring races that you do not
have to have a USCF license for (available free at many sports stores)

    - The Globe does OK on Fridays..

Velo-news is probably the best source, it's bi-weekly during the
season, and that's where the promoters of the better races place
    their ads.

Bike racing is a somewhat flakey sport, races come together real
quickly sometimes, even too quickly for V-news. In that case, call
your district representative (assuming you're a licensed rider),
it's their job to know what's going on. Other times, races planned
for years get cancelled at the last minute (re: Tropicana).

If you are interested in citizen's (non-licensed) racing then the
Globe Sports Plus and Sportscape are the better choices. I can't
think of any other sources offhand (Chuck, ya beat me to it).

I have only the preliminary schedule for this year, there are MANY
more than this (see previous replies).

July 26-27 New Bedford Pro-Am, New Bedford, Ma. Road race 26th,
Criterium 27th. As one who has raced it four times and finished
once, THIS IS THE RACE TO SEE if you can see only one this year.
You want pain and suffering? You got it. The RR is new this year,
I rode the course this spring, except for the part on I-495(!),
looks good. The criterium is the toughest I've ever ridden, a roughly
one mile course with a 2 block long steep climb, short sprint, S-turn
on a steep decent, potholes etc. The field is truly international,
with lots of pros. It's worth the trip just for the banquet afterwards.

August 10 Fairfield County Road Race Weston CT. Short course around
the Aspetuck reservoir. (The course is almost in my home town!)

August 17 Lime Rock Criterium Lime Rock CT Around the automobile
    road race track.

August 30 Hartford Criterium Hartford CT Around Bushnell park in
downtown Hartford, great for viewing since you can see the whole
course. Bad because it's in the seediest section of town.

August 31 Ninigret Park Charlestown RI At an abandoned airport
on the RI shore, another great spectator course, just remember
to bring lots of drinks because ther's NO shade.

September 7 Manchester Criterium, Manchester CT No Catagory II so
    I've never done it.

September 14 Race for the Rock Plymouth MA Another great race to
watch, a decent course with a small hill and a long sprint in full
view. Sit on the hill overlooking Plymouth bay.

September 20 Sunapee Road race Sunapee NH A long, difficult course
with an exciting finish, not so good for the spectator since it's
    so long (96 miles).

September 21 Cornwall RR Cornwall CT Has a KILLER hill in it, great
    for photographing twisted faces.

October 5 Columbus Day Crit, New Haven CT The course changes every
few years so I'm not sure which one it might be.

October 19 Lime Rock Crit Lime Rock CT Same as the last one.

October 16 Brimfield Cyclo Cross Brimfield Ma For those who've never
seen cyclocross, it's a comedy...racers running almost as much as
riding through mud, waterholes, over logs etc. crashing every few
hundred yards. It's real serious racing, though, with lots of action.

That should give you some ideas. The training races at Newton, Hingham,
and Bellerica are also fun to watch. If you need any info like phone
    numbers etc. just ask.
