75.0. "DuPont Prize (65mph) won" by EUCLID::PAULHUS () Thu Jun 05 1986 12:00

      The DuPont Prize for the first bike to go 65 mph, unassisted, on
    the flat & level, has been won by Gardner Martin's Easy Racer team
    with Fred Markham riding. The run was on a highway near Mono Lake
    in California near Nevada, at about 8000' altitude.
      I don't know what effect this will have on my effort. It probably
    means that if any real problems pop up in the next couple of months,
    we'll not go to Expo (August 24 to 31) and spend some more time
    here to "get it right". Since Paulhus Consulting is financing
    this effort (ie 'Advertising'), we'll get maximum exposure at Expo,
    so we will try to make it. There was talk of a Regional event at
    Indy in September. I'll see the head of the Indy Chapter of IHPVA
    at Gear International in Buffalo next weekend and get the latest
    info.

    For your sake, I'm sorry to hear this. I was hoping that you would
    have a shot at the prize. This challenge has been open for quite
    a while now. Wasn't the prize $10,000?

    	The DuPont prize was originally 15K. With interest, it's now
    up to 18 or 19 K. Gardner Martin, builder of the Easy Racer
    recumbents, needs the $$ a lot more than I do. I've heard that
    he lives in an ex-chicken coop. The tow vehicle was a Ford Falcon
    Ranchero pick-up. Etc, etc. Those guys were SERIOUS! We're just
    messing around, having fun, in comparison. - Chris

    How does a tow vehicle relate to "unassisted?"

    Maybe to get up to speed??

75.6Reductio ad absurdumSHIVER::JPETERSJohn Peters, DTN 266-4391Thu Jun 26 1986 11:113
    Y' could also go down a hell of a ramp and get clocked at 110 for
    a few seconds; unassisted should really mean just that, I would
    think (now watch me catch hell...)
75.7To tow, or not two too ? That is the absurdium...EUREKA::REG_BThu Jun 26 1986 14:3612

    	I think you're joking, but in case someone takes it seriously
    and/or wants to know, here goes;

    	The tow vehicle (old ford ranchero, I think Chris had said)
    is the one that tows the trailer that the HPV gets to the place
    on/in i.e. its their trailerin'_an'_travelin'_around_in vehicle.
