"The Search for the Trail"
The poster Colin refers to is publication 50M-6-80-156635. Printed
by the (Massachusetts) State Division of Tourism (Department of
Commerce), approved by Alfred C. Holland, State Purchasing Agent. I
got mine from within DEC. When I called the State Division of
Tourism, they said they had never heard of the trail, though they
acknowledged having heard of Alfred C. Holland. The Boston office
gave me the phone number of the Berkshire office. Their reasoning
was that one end of the trail is in the western part of the state.
(The other end is in Boston.)
The Berkshire office thought the poster sounded so nice, that they
asked me to send them a copy. In exchange, they'll send me some
brochures about the Berkshires. Nothing about the bike trail, though.
Which brings up the topic of bike trails, which seems to be
controversial in bike organizations. I've been on some around here,
such as those in Lincoln, and agree that they can be more dangerous
than roads, especially if designed as badly as they are around here.
(The biggest problem here is inconsistency. Trails end or the pavement
disappears abruptly. Also, there are lots of blind curves...)
I've also been on bits of the New York State Canal Recreationway (still
under construction, from New York City to Buffalo, or thereabouts).
The sections I've seen (20 miles near Albany) were pretty reasonable.
Around there, it runs along the Mohawk River, with few if any crossings,
and as straight as practical, given the terrain. When I talked to the
(NY) State Trail Coordinator this week, she said the completed section
near Albany (40 miles) is rated "Class A", whatever that means. She
also said the Syracuse to Rome section (40 miles) is better (no details
on why). Between the two, there's little finished. The map I have
indicates that there's more completed between Buffalo and slightly east
of Rochester. The Trail Coordinator said she'll send me some detailed
maps of the completed sections. Anybody up for a field trip?
Is it time for a new note, Moderator?
