| No opposition. I know of people who can't access it in it's
present form. I just wish someone had clued me in on ADD ENTRY before
I wasted a lot of time typing OPEN ... Chris

painless?

| Is there an administrator for this notes file?
If so, please identify yourself.
Suggest this person, after conversion, take on a purge procedure.
Maybe notes with no response for 90 days get deleted unless it's of
general and lasting interest in your opinion. Other thoughts on this?

| Aye, convert, ye heathen!
I agree in general with Mike about purging old, unused notes. However,
some of them may treat subjects of seasonal interest -- winter clothing,
for example -- that will crop up every year and shouldn't have to be
reinvented.
The moderator is generally the person who opens the notesfile, n'est-ce pas?
Who is BETTER::LC?

| In defense of "the moderator", who I assume to be Kathy
Norton, she is on maternity leave until ??-???-19??.
With regard to purging old notes, I for one, am against it.
There are several notes files that I have come across a year or two
after they started which have topics that are still interesting to a
new reader. Sometimes a reply to an otherwise "dead" note will
stimulate a discussion with the original contributors, who have since
learned a little more.

| I agree with Reg, while there are files (CLASSIFIED_ADS, for example)
where purging the old stuff makes sense, there are others where it
doesn't. Since VAX Notes will allow the original author (from the
original node) or the moderator to delete old notes, MAIL to the author
(assuming he or she is still at DEC) asking whether a clearly outmoded
note is still relevant, and suggesting it be deleted (e.g., an "I've got
a nice used bicycle for sale"), will often do the trick, if you really
think it's a problem.
As for converting the file, I'm surprised it isn't in SYS$NOTES, but in
any event, if someone wants to volunteer to host the file (to be a
conference) and convert it, and no one complains, we COULD do it even
without Kathy (although it would be a courtesy to her to contact her and
get her opinion). I'm sure some of the bicyclists here know her well
enough to give her a call at home.

| As a friend of Kathy, and one of those who prodded her the most
to get this file going, I think it's safe to say that she would not
be concerned with the details of how we do the bike notefile. She's
got other concerns now-a-days. All we really need is a host/moderator.
I nominate Reg. (I'm a contractor, so I really can't). - Chris

| Well, I'd volunteer, but I'm going to be moving from LSM over to the
U.S. Area in MRO3 around the end of next month, and I'm not sure yet
just what system I'll be on.
I'm not sure MENTOR is running VAX Notes server yet. LSMVAX is, and
if Gary Miller wants to volunteer to host the conference, I'll show
him how. We have the server running, and are using it for a number
of local as well as public conferences.

| I would like to volunteer to host the VAXnotes version of
this notes file. I have experience converting notes files
since I have been the host for Macintosh notes and am now
the (self proclaimed) host of the VAXnotes version of the
SCUBA notes file. If the original host would like to
do the conversion, have her contact me before Monday, April 14th.
If noone objects I will do the conversion and make the
appropriate announcements during the week of 4/14/86.

| Sounds like a super idea, John. Your systems (VIKING, etc) seem to be
pretty accessible, and I've not had problems accessing other conferences
over there.

| Since the originator of this Notefile just gave birth to a daughter,
and will not be participating in DEC Bicycling activity for a while,
I'm sure she is not concerned with it's proposed format. The comments
of the readers and current contributors should be used to determine
what to do. I say DO IT, John. And thanks. - Chris

The conversion will be done on Monday, April 14th (barring
unforseen circumstances) and I will post replies to this
note and note 1 when the new file is available. To prepare
for that time, the file name will be:
RAINBO::FLG:[WASSER]BICYCLE.NOTE
(The names VIKING:: and MOSAIC:: will also work)

P.S. I wish the weather would clear up so I can take my
new CatEye Solar out for a test ride!
