My wife is interested in doing some road riding and hasn't been
biking since the early 80's. She thinks she wants to try a
mountain bike style or hybrid. I am looking for touring style
bike w/ 15+ gears and sturdy. Also interested in a bugger for
our 14 month old daughter. I can't seem to find any place local
that rents besides Larry's and they are out of buggers at the
moment. Does anyone have any of this equipment that we could
try to buy or have any other solid leads as far as rentals go?
Thanks,

Two 27x1 rims, alloy, 36 hole. I would prefer a box-section narrow
rim, but I'm also interested in cheapness (and straightness). I'll
consider whole wheels, depending on cost, but I've decided to try my
hand at wheelbuilding and return the Viscount to its original (27")
configuration in one go. If you've got some old stuff cluttering up
the basement, let me know.
I'm also on the lookout for a frame. 52cm, 531 or similar. Doesn't
have to be too modern, in fact I'd like something rather traditional.
For reasons I can't explain, an English steel bike seems most
attractive, but again it may come down to what I find. Upwards of 20
years old is OK as long as it's not damaged or rusted. This will be a
scrounging project, since I don't *need* a new bike, but I'd like
something a little snappier in handling, something like a European road
race geometry. I think it would be fun to put it together too.
If I find the frame, I'll probably be looking for other bits. Nifty
stuff from the early 80's primarily.

ten years ago....)

ok ok ... so its an act of desperation. I know that!
besides I already thought of that. And more importantly its good to
start setting up excuses early on! e.g. if I had a good saddle I could

Thanks Jim. I called them on the phone. They are the same
Bibcyle Classics who used to be in Denver, CO. They do
have plenty of 5-speed ORO freewheels in stock. At $34
a piece they should be around for a long time.
In the meantime, I located a supplier in Michigan
who has 5-speed Shimano freewheels for $15. I ordered
a few of them.
It is getting really tough to locate consumable items
for older bicycles. I have a Raleigh Proffesional and
a Holdsworths Super Mistral. Both are top quality bikes
and fun to ride. However the rear ends are spaced for
5 speeds.

| One advantage to the older stuff - Suntour, Diacompe, ... is that it
lasts a long time. I have 10 years of daily riding on my road bike
and the only hardware that is suffering is the spokes - on average, I
replace 1 per month. That and many tires are all I have replaced.
The original chain still works fine. Those friction shifters never
need adjustments either. Consider yourself fortunate to own a dinosaur
bike...

Bob,
Glad you found an inexpensive source. Did you ask Bicycle Classics how much a
Suntour freewheel costs? They are quite a bit less than the Regina Oro ones.
BTW, I restored the 3-speed Phillips you sold me and my mother is enjoying it
in Florida. It looks and rides like a new bike, but it took a lot of hours of
restoration to get it there. The special handlebars and 4-speed hub, along
with a pair of 26 X 1 3/8 alloy club rims (from San Francisco) and a new
hairpin seat (also from California) are being built into a 1969 Dunelt man's
bike in original candy apple red. It's one of the nicest looking bikes I have
ever seen. If all goes as planned, I will be riding it on the 4th of July.

| I dont think you want to do this but ...
I think you could easily place a 6 or 7sp freewheel back there without
any modification to the frame. I have done this with my old Trek and
it works fine. Given that your bikes are steel you could also have
the rear spacing increased by a shop.

| Back in the late seventies, they changed from 5 speed to 6 speed
narrow with the same spacing. You may need a 1mm washer, but that is
about it. If you have 120mm spacing, fitting a 7 speed would require
a bit of prying the rear end, or having it cold set to 126mm.

This is even more true for Campy equipment. The early suntour
derailleurs would last about a year for me. The Campy Nuovo
Record derailleur on my Holdsworth must have 25-30K miles on
on according to my trusty Huret Multido. It is hard to tell
exactly how much because I went through several Cateye
speedometers that went berserk after only a year or two.

A streched chain will take out a freewheel first and then the
chainwheels. Replacing a chain every 3K miles or so is cheap
protection for more expensive components.
> Consider yourself fortunate to own a dinosaur bike...
My first ten speed was a Schwinn Varsity. That was a dinosaur.
Next was a Dawes Double Blue. That was a little better. The
Raleigh Pro and Holdsworth Super Mistral have first rate
531 frames. Hardly dinosaur quailty, I prefer to think of
them as classics.

Yeah, if I could find a Ultra-Six, it would probably work fine.
But they are probably more rare than a five speeds. I have
cold set frames before to make a six speed fit. However, I
am loath to do this to classic frames. Moreover, the Holdsworth
has cracks in the chain stays that have brazed-on patches.
(What do you want from a frame that has carried panniers through
Scotland and Norway, completed Paris-Brest, and is my daily
compmuter?)

| I probably have one or more 6 speeds in my basement. I think that I
have a 13/26. Will trade for a 6 pack.
(I am in Stow)

3.375 | Chainring 144mm | WRKSYS::FRANTZ | Dr. Awkward | Fri May 09 1997 09:38 | 10 |
| I'm looking for a 46t (actually anything from 44 to 48 would work)
chainring in 144mm bcd. This is for a fixed-gear beater, so NOS Campy
is not appropriate... rather the opposite end of the spectrum. Does
anyone have an old Sugino or similar ring in this size they'd like to
part with (somewhat) cheaply? Dirt and wear shouldn't matter much, up
to a point.
Thanks!

3.377 | WANTED: mtn bike for kid | SOLVIT::LANDRY | | Mon May 19 1997 10:51 | 9 |
| I'd like to find a used - but decent condition - mountain bike for my
10 year old. He's about 5' tall - I suspect a frame size around 14"
would work. I hate to buy new when he's going to grow out of it
quickly.
