917.0. "are DAGGL-AA and DAGGL-BA supported on Baby GIGAS?" by MXOV06::EPELAEZ () Tue Apr 22 1997 18:15

    Hello,

    Does anyone could explain me what is the reason because on the
    Installation and Service Manual from Gigaswitch/ATM 5-Slot system
    there is a note which stablish that:
    "DAGGL-AA and DAGGL-AB are not supported for the use in the
     GIGAswitch/ATM 5-slot system"

    We have a customer who asked us and we have not find any document
    regarding this issue.

    I would appreciate any comments.

    Thanks in advance and best regards

    Enrique

917.1different power requirementsNOTED::defctb.hpn.lkg.dec.com::melaragniBill, [email protected]Wed Apr 23 1997 08:4721
The most important reason for this is that the power distribution
mechanisms for 5-slot and 14-slot box are different. The 5-slot
box distributes 5v to all of the linecards while the 14-slot box
distributes 48v. A card that is not designed to operate from +5v
directly will not operate in the 5-slot GS/ATM box.

Cards that are designed to work in both systems have a DC/DC
converter (sometimes called a "power brick") that is socketted. When
installed in a 5-slot box, a special "converter" is put into the linecard
that allows it to draw +5v from the system. When installed in the 14-slot
box, a 48v-to-5v converter takes the 48v and turns it into +5v for the line
card.

Also, along the same lines, I believe that the +5v and 48v inputs are
on different connectors on the linecard. Older modules, like the DAGGL-AA,
don't have the needed +5v connector and cannot draw power from the 5-slot
box.

Hope this helps,
