898.0. "IPNNI vs IP Switching" by SCASS1::DAVIES (Mark, NPB Sales, Dallas,TX) Wed Apr 09 1997 09:54
I need to ask the question again, since I do not have a good
understanding of IPNNI as of yet and how it compares to IP Switching
from Ipsilon. I have read note 847 many times and the answer is not
there, best I can tell.
IPNNI seems to be a protocol to allow multiple protocols over ATM. It
does not seem to allow the routers in the network to be bypassed and
have data switched across the network.
IP Switching (Ipsilon) allows the routers to be bypassed and the data
to be switched-only from end-to-end, thus giving much higher
performance. It does have anything to do with multiple protocols over
ATM since it only supports IP.
SO, my question, which is based on Bay Networks constantly telling my
customers thet IPNNI is a standards based impelemtation of IP Switching
from Ipsilon, which is proprietary:
- Is IPNNI comparable to IP Switching?
My customers are BELIEVING Bay and telling us that we are proprietary,
mainly because Digital has been unable to respond to this demeaning
statement.
REgards,
Mark
