864.0. "X.25 and ATM" by TKOV51::EGAWA (Kiyoshi Egawa DTN:699-7215 SalesSupport/Japan) Wed Mar 12 1997 06:14

Hi,

I'm not familar with ATM functionalities. A technical support engineer said
it cannot be able to do, other engineer it will be ok.

Please anyone suggest on my concern.

Customer is planning their own VAN(Value Added Network) on ATM network. One
of issues is interoperability with the lagacy X.25 "bare" interface.
Could Digital UNIX and WAN support (X.25) support below configuration ?
Basically customer requires a box which can connect both X.25 and ATM
directly, but I think it will be impossible.

      Legacy System

                                                    |
          +--------+ +---+---+X.25 relay system
          | | LANE (~~~~~~~~) LANE | |
          | ??? +-------( ATM )---------+ |
          +--------+ (________) +-------+
          ??? : I'm not sure. Digital UNIX
                                                WAN support

Any help will be appreciated.

The digital unix system could be multihoned (i.e,. be connected to
both an ATM network and a X.25 network) and route between the two.

Be aware although i worked some on X.25 (actually BX.25) in a prior
life, i don't pretend to understand all the technical details of
    X.25.

There's no reason why couldn't put a sync interface into the
same box having the ATM interface thus ridding the need for
the DECNIS.

Of course, there's still the issue that an X.25 kit for
DIGITAL UNIX V4.0 is still a couple of months away...

In early 1995 we already routed traffic from ATM to FDDI and Ethernet (and
prototype E3- and HSSI-Adapters) and vice versa just by using a DEC 3000 500 and
DIGITAL UNIX (V3.0B these days... later on V3.2).

We needed it and there hadn't been *any* router or switch to do so at this time
(at least from DIGITAL).

So go ahead with .2s suggestion. Besides the time constraints there's really no
reason not to do so.

Thank you very much for your replies.

My understand in below is correct ? I think no customizations (application
programs) are needed. Am I correct ?

In an alpha box , Can WANsupport X.25 capability run on LANE ?

Since LLC2 does not use multicasts, I see no reason why that configuration
would not work. However, no testing of DECnet/OSI or X.25 over LANE has
been done (and there are no resources to perform the testing anyway).
