I believe there is such a thing as "switched VPCs", which would be signalled
much the same way as switched VCCs.

It depends on the switch. Our switch is currently only able to set up VCCs.
We are working on a feature that will let you manually provision up to three
virtual path terminations on a V2 line card (the one with the four mod-PHYs).
This will let you do things like
Site 1 Site 2
+--------------+ +--------------+
| GS/ATM | | GS/ATM |
| | | |
| Lots of |-----+ +-----| Lots of |
| VCCs feeding | | | | VCCs feeding |
| into 3 VPs | | | | into one VP |
+--------------+ | | +--------------+
| |
/-----------------------\
( wide area ATM service )
\-----------------------/
Site 3 | | Site 4
+--------------+ | | +--------------+
| GS/ATM | | | | GS/ATM |
| | | | | |
| Lots of |-----+ +-----| Lots of |
| VCCs feeding | | VCCs feeding |
| into 3 VPs | | into one VP |
+--------------+ +--------------+
which could be very useful if you only have to pay for one WAN ATM connection
at each site instead of three. Perhaps someone else could elaborate on the
intended use for this feature.
Note that the GIGAswitch will not act as a Virtual Path Switch (the switching
function provided by the wide area service in this example).

One more thing: When you place a V2 card into Virtual Path Termination mode,
only one port on the card will be available. The reason is that the VPs take
up hardware resources that are normally used for the other ports.

Ack! The two boxes on the right of the diagram should say, of course, "lots
of VCCs feeding into 3 VPs".

Thanks for the info. So then would it be true to say that an end node,
with, say, an ATMworks351 card, would not be able to setup a VP. He can
only create a VC with the Switch. The switch would then bundle that VP
into the appropriate VC?

Any adapter will be subject to its own limitations <and> the limitations
of the switch to which it is connected.
No adapter attached to a current GIGAswitch/ATM can create switched VPCs
or use non-zero VPIs.
When version 2.5 firmware is released, adapters will be able to use non-
zero VPIs when creating switched VCCs. Whether or not the ATMworks 351
will be able to use non-zero VPIs is something that you should find out
by reading the manual or contacting the product manager.
Even with version 2.5 firmware, the GIGAswitch/ATM will not function as
a Virtual Path Switch. Virtual circuits for the same port and VPI will
act as independent circuits which can go to different destinations, not
as bundled circuits that must go wherever the virtual path leads them.

| The host software would also have to support switch virtual paths, which at a
minimum requires UNI 4.0 signalling.
I'm also not exactly clear on how you then signal VC's within the SVP.
