841.0. "Relocate subnet to another ATM NIC?" by ACISS1::HAYES_J () Mon Feb 24 1997 14:38
My understanding is that we can have multiple IP addresses, including
multiple subnets on a single ATM NIC.
Given a Digital UNIX system with 2 ATM NICs, configured with LANE as
two separate subnets. Is it possible to, in the case of a NIC failure
(or fiber failure), to "fail-over" the failed subnet to the other NIC?
For example: let's say I have subnet X on NIC 0, and subnet Y on NIC
1, and I partition my network load across the two subnet addresses.
When NIC 0 fails (or fiber is pulled), can I detect the failure,
and reconfigure subnet X onto NIC 1 (without loosing subnet Y)?
Granted you would loose all socket connections, but you would not
affect any users on subnet Y. This would minimize the impact of the
network failure to 50% of my users.
Thanks in advance for any feedback.
