834.0. "ATM on UNIX4.0 a/b" by USCTR1::16.157.224.231::ERICGAN (NPBU s/s) Tue Feb 18 1997 21:55

Hi,
This is a same question with NOTE 833.3	but for UNIX4.0B.
******************** NOTE 833.3 ********************************
I just do a ATM test on Alpha 4100 with UNIX4.0a and GS/ATM and VNswitch
900EA and PC. There is a ATM350 adapter in Alpha, and the PC is on Ethernet.
firstly, the LANE must up in Alpha, but I can't get it, even the ATM link can
not up!
And, can I get my test work?

All help will be appreciated.
eric
****************************************************************

We have both UNIX4.0A AND B, which is better one for the test?
Need detail help for config on UNIX!

Sensearly,
eric

Hi,

by now, I get the link up, and create Elan on alpha, and see the alpha on
GS/ATM as a Elan client. But the net not work.

Why?

834.2V4.0B is preferableSMURF::GREBUSDTN 381-1426 - Digital UnixWed Feb 19 1997 13:3611
    V4.0B has a few more fixes the V4.0A. But if you install the ATM
    related patches for V4.0A (which anyone using 4.0A should do), then
    they are equivalent.

    You haven't given us enough information to diagnose any problem. What
    are the exact commands you entered on the Digital UNIX system? What
    does ifconfig -a show? How about atmelan show? How is the other
    system you're trying to contact configured?

1.At the VN900EA, do nothing on it, just setup an ip address 16.168.208.10;
2.At the GS/ATM, my config is:
	elanall 1 -e
	elanall 1 +nv
	lecs -e
	lecs +nv
3.At the Alpha on UNIX4.0b:

==== filename: atm.conf
print Starting ATM Network
up driver=lta0
wait state=up driver=lta0
# wait till address registration is complete
run /usr/sbin/atmsig up driver=lta0 wait
run /usr/sbin/atmarp -c lis=0 driver=lta0
# allow dynamic ESI time to register with switch
sleep 3
# For setting flow control
+vfc driver=lta0
run ifconfig lis0 16.168.208.103 netmask 255.255.255.0 up
# For making this a client on a LIS
#run /usr/sbin/atmarp -h lis=0 client atmserver serverip
#run /usr/sbin/atmarp -h lis=0 server
run /usr/sbin/atmarp -h lis=0 client 3999990000000008002bb5100088002b803eb800

run /usr/sbin/atmelan create driver=lta0
print ATM network started

    Things look fine on the UNIX side (i.e., elan0 is operational). Can
    you verify that the VN900EA has joined the same ELAN on the Gigaswitch?
834.5Confusion between CLIP and LANE?SMURF::GREBUSDTN 381-1426 - Digital UnixThu Feb 20 1997 14:2615
    You have the same IP address configured on interface lis0 (Classical
    IP) and elan0 (LANE).

    If you're not using Classical IP, remove the
    atmarp and ifconfig lis0 commands from your atm.conf. If you're also
    trying to use Classical IP, then you need different IP addresses (in
    different subnets) for each interface. The atmarp -h command would
    also be wrong...it has the lis0 IP address as the address of the ARP
    server.

    I also didn't see an ifconfig command for elan0 (although the ifconfig
    -a output shows that it was done.

I got it!
I removed the atmarp commands as you said, and add ifconfig for elan0, the
net is working!

Thank you very much!
