824.0. "GIGASWITCH/ATM and MODULAR UTP LINE CARD PROBLEM?" by SOS6::HOFFMANN (HOFFMANN Lionel/loc=evt/DTN number=858 5647) Wed Feb 12 1997 14:07

Hello,

    I have installed a gigaswitch/ATM running version V2.0 more precisely:

    _CMM version 1.80
    _QLCV15 and QLCV20 line cards version V2.0

    I had two line cards : _an old type QLCV15 optical (4 mmf non modular
    ports)
                           _And a new one QLCV20 , a modular one

    Some questions :

    1)Each card works fine separately into the gigaswitch and becomes the
    master one.But it is impossible to get both at the same time because of
    hardware incompatibility.Can someone confirm that point?is it normal?

    2)The final configuration must use the modular card with UTP PMD's.
    I had to setup LANE between one UTP port of the modular line card and a
    sun machine with an ATM/SBUS adapter but I got problems....

    The Physical link has never become up between the two devices .
    I'm sure of the cable because I'tried different straight cables as it
    is normally.......

    So Of course I could'nt get the LAN ok because no link up...
    I have tried UNI version 3.0 and 3.1 but the same.......

    So did I forget anything? Is there any specific setup for the line card?
    It seems ok with the Clock menu because it is recognized as a
    QUAD LINE card V2.0...and the upper led is green
    But the port is seen as "NOT CONNECTED" and into a "TEST" state
    Did I miss some points?

    3)Normally,I must configure also a VNSWITCH on a second UTP port of the
     modular line card.Does somedy know if it is ok with version V1.0-106 for
    using a UTP PMD within the VNSWITCH which is the same normally that used

    with the gigaswitch utp modular line card???(DAGGU-AA is the part
    number)

	Any help appreciated

You should be able to mix linecards just fine. I do it all the time with
my test switch in the lab.

Make sure that both line cards are running the same firmware version -- we
don't support mixing and matching firmware versions.

NOT CONNECTED is an ILMI address registration state that could be caused either
by no physical connection or by some ILMI/UNI problem.

If you have ...

    A SONET STS-1 UTP mod-PHY Try toggling the port between SONET
                                        and SDH mode. If you have the mode
                                        set to one value on the GS/ATM, and
                                        another on the Sun, it won't work!

    An E3/T3 mod-PHY Try configuring different line type
                                        settings in SNMP.

    An E1 mod-PHY Check with engineering to see if it
                                        is one of the "old" models that can
                                        only support PLCP mode.

824.3Wrong firmware or wrong cableNOTED::defctb.lkg.dec.com::BillBill Melaragni, HPN, DTN 226-6670Thu Feb 13 1997 07:5419
There are one of two likely problems with this config:

1) The verion of the line card code does not support the UTP modPHY

2) You have the wrong cable.

For the first case, you'll need to do this simple test: remove the UTP
modPHY card and re-insert it. If the code supports this PHY card, the two
LEDs on the front of the PHY card will blink green three times within one
second. If the LEDs do NOT blink, you have an old version of code and you
need to upgrade it.

If the LEDs do blink then you likely have the wrong kind of cable. You may
need a cross-over cable, not straight thru. The modPHY installation manual
details the pinout of the UTP card. Compare this to the pinout of the SUN
adapter card.

824.4Upgrade to latest codeNPSS::ROUNDSThu Feb 13 1997 10:203
    Before you do anything, I suggest you upgrade to the latest firmware
    versions. Clock code is at 1.8.2. Then, at least you know you are
    running the latest and greatest code. Then start working any problems.

    Hello,

    Thank you everybody for your help but I have always the problem
    and it is becoming critical on the customer site.......
    does somedy already installed that type of module?

    I have installed a OPTICAL PMD within the module and IT WORKS.
    Only the UTP PMD's don't work....but I am sure the firmware is ok
    because when i plug into one utp pmd ,the two upper leds blink three
    times.......
    About the cable ,I have built a new cable with the rigt pinout ...
    It is ok ...except if it is different on digital products...

    The problem is critical because this sun machine works on a FORE SWITCH
    using UTP links........
    Any ideas. any experience?
    Who is responsible at the engineering side of such a module?I need
    URGENT informations .......
    regards

824.6pinout againNOTED::defctb.lkg.dec.com::BillBill Melaragni, HPN, DTN 226-6670Mon Feb 17 1997 08:0016

Well, you may still have the wrong pinout. The Forum provides for DCE and
DTE pinouts of the MJ connector. We have choosen to make the modPHY an "ATM
Network Equipment" device. The pinout is:

1	RX+
2	RX-
7	TX+
8	TX-

Pins 3,4,5,6 are tied to chassis via a capacitor.

824.7Thank you billSOS6::HOFFMANNHOFFMANN Lionel/loc=evt/DTN number=858 5647Tue Feb 18 1997 09:3513
    Thank you bill .Everything is ok now with the pinout.
    In addition to this,I could see thet The version was 2.0 but a Field
    Test one .I have Upgraded with the last one ( Firmware code 300 ) and
    now it works.I did'nt see immediately that it was wrong because when I
    I plugged the UTP PMD ,The upper leds flashed Three times......
    But now it is OK

    I have another problem of LANE EMULATION now with a sun machine but it
    is another story..(See next entries..if you have any ideas)

    Best regards
