1160.0. "Errors creating Database Sessions" by OPENED::LIGHT_L () Mon Mar 24 1997 15:08
One of my users is reporting the following problems from ALF_TOOLS on the
PAND system in Alpharetta. I have had several similar occurances in the past
several weeks with other users.
PROBLEM:
ALF_TOOLS, 173803 profile, STARS V2.6-4
This problem started after my account, 173803, was set to have privileges to
modify the PATHWORKS database.
I originally had 6 sessions, tried to add one more for PATHWORKS:
Steps to recreate problem:
ADD SESSION Session Name = PATHWORKS
Make the PATHWORKS session the current session
CTRL/Z to query prompt
Get message "There are no currently active databases"
KP3 to go to Database Selection, C to expand the database list, V to put
database list in edit window
Search for PATHWORKS
CTRL/Z to exit from edit window
X to select PATHWORKS database
The screen returns to the main ALF_TOOLS menu, the bell rings, and there is a
message at the bottom of the screen with the text
An error has occurred in STARS - STorage And Retrieval System
If I enter a 1 to return to STARS, the database list flashes quickly on the
screen and then again returns to the main menu with the error at the bottom of
the screen.
If I enter 1 again to return to STARS, I get a window with a query prompt but
the reverse video line at the bottom of the screen says PATHWORKS session,
Database Selection, 785 lines.
If I enter KP2 to go to the Session List, the reverse video line remains the
same but the current session is indicated as ECO_SUMMARY which is my default
database. All sessions are listed, including the new PATHWORKS session.
If I change session to MAIN and do a CTRL/Z to return to the query prompt, the
reverse video line remains the same (PATHWORKS Database Selection) and I can't
do any queries.
I continue getting errors until I log out and back in to ALF_TOOLS.
When I log back in, I can get back into STARS and do queries, I can change
sessions and do more queries, but my PATHWORKS session is gone. I can add
other sessions and select databases in them. I only get the error if I try
to select the PATHWORKS database or the COMMUNICATIONS database which
contains the PATHWORKS database. Even weirder, I can select the
COMMUNICATIONS database if I select another database first that I don't
have privileges to change but I can't access the articles in the
PATHWORKS database even tho I have the COMMUNICATIONS database on.
I deleted all but two sessions and the symptoms change for the better somewhat
when I try to create the PATHWORKS session and select the PATHWORKS database; I
can still get back to my MAIN session and do queries. But I still
can't access the PATHWORKS database.

1160.2 | Try it now | BSS::J_VAETH | | Mon Mar 24 1997 17:39 | 7 |
| Try it now. I went into the PIN profile database file for ALF_TOOLS and
manually deleted some of the session records for badge 173803. If it
still doesn't work then I'd try deleting the entire profile for badge
173803 and readding it.
We haven't seen this problem on the EIRS cluster. It could be due to
the different versions of VMS (V6.1 on EIRS, V6.2 on PAND).

1160.3 | See Note 1147.10 for more info | BSS::J_VAETH | | Tue Mar 25 1997 10:04 | 4 |
| This is the same problem as stated in Note 1147.10. It has to do with
users having a parent database and logical database(s) under that parent
selected also. The easiest fix is to delete their profile and re-add it.
